Bray was a human male who specialized as a flametrooper. He held the captain's rank within the First Order's Stormtrooper Corps. During the period known as the Cold War, after some creatures launched an assault on personnel inside a tunnel located on Starkiller Base, Bray was appointed as the commanding officer in charge of a cleaning crew. This crew's mission was to eliminate the "infestation." Before the operation commenced, one of the crew's stormtroopers, identified as FN-2187, inquired about the nature of the threat they would be facing, but Bray was unable to provide any details to the soldier.
Once inside the tunnel, the creatures ambushed the crew, and Bray found himself overwhelmed by the attack. To protect his captain, FN-2187 grabbed Bray's flamethrower and used it to kill the creatures that were attacking him, inadvertently burning the trooper in the process. After it appeared that their mission was complete, Bray instructed FN-2187 to dispose of the creatures' remains. He then threatened to transfer the trooper to trash guard duty if he complained, suspecting that the trooper considered himself above the task. However, FN-2187 eventually discovered that the creatures were actually a native species, and he approached Bray to suggest relocating the animals. Bray dismissed the animals as worthless and accused FN-2187 of complaining, punishing him by assigning him to guard trash being transported to the Garbage Moon of Maher. This was part of FN-2187's plan to provoke Bray, allowing him to release some of the creatures to safety on the moon.

During the Cold War era, Bray was a captain and flametrooper within the First Order's military forces, the successor to the Galactic Empire. He was stationed aboard Starkiller Base, a superweapon built into the world of Ilum in the Unknown Regions. Following the discovery of an "infestation" of creatures by a construction unit working on a flood chamber, Bray and a cleaning crew of stormtroopers were sent to deal with the situation. The creatures had devoured two First Order personnel, leaving only one survivor, from whom Bray's team could not obtain any useful information regarding the creatures' nature. To assist Bray's operation, Captain Phasma assigned troopers FN-2187 and FN-3761 to his crew.
Upon their arrival at Deck Nine, FN-2187 questioned the presence of troopers in a cleaning crew. In response, Bray, while testing his flamethrower, explained that they were dealing with creatures capable of consuming people. Since Bray had no further details for the stormtrooper, he permitted FN-2187 to speak with the sole survivor of the creatures' attack. By the time Bray summoned the crew to proceed, the survivor had not provided any valuable information, but he did warn FN-2187 that the "infestation" possessed teeth.

Before they moved into the tunnel, Bray told his stormtroopers they would be fighting in darkness. He dismissed FN-3761's suggestion to use explosives, stating that the chamber was more valuable to the First Order than the trooper. Once the soldiers were inside, using floodlights for visibility, the creatures attacked with a sonic scream. The creatures appeared and began to overwhelm Bray, causing the stormtrooper officer to fall and lose his flamethrower.
Witnessing his commanding officer in danger, FN-2187 picked up the flamethrower and fired it at Bray and the creatures. He believed Bray would be protected by his heat-resistant flametrooper armor. Bray was burned, but the animals attacking him were all killed. Subsequently, believing the infestation to be eliminated, Bray ordered the troopers to retreat, but he instructed FN-2187 to bring in a trash skiff and clean up the remains. When FN-2187 inquired if he had been assigned the task because he had burned Bray, the Captain interpreted the question as the stormtrooper considering himself superior to the task. Bray reprimanded the trooper, stating that no task was beneath anyone serving the First Order. Bray then threatened FN-2187, saying that any further complaints would result in the stormtrooper being assigned to escort trash.

While performing the cleanup, FN-2187 felt that he did not deserve the job, thinking to himself that Bray was only slightly burned. However, the stormtrooper encountered the creatures again and discovered that they were a native species. Realizing that the creatures would be killed if discovered, he formulated a plan to remove them from the planet. FN-2187 rejoined the crew and, despite being warned about Bray's anger, informed Bray that they should save the animals. Assuming that the stormtrooper was complaining again, Bray lashed out at the trooper and fulfilled his earlier threat by reassigning FN-2187 to protect trash destined for the Garbage Moon of Maher.
However, FN-2187 had anticipated being sent away and brought some of the creatures with him. After arriving at the garbage ship, FN-2187 told the owner, Marialew, that he had been given the job because he burned his captain, which she joked was a sufficient reason. Upon reaching the moon, FN-2187 and Marialew released the animals with some of their own kind, as some creatures were already present due to previous excavations. Ultimately, FN-2187's act of defiance was not his last, as he later deserted the First Order and joined General Leia Organa's Resistance.

Bray was a human male with dark skin and a bald head. He held the rank of captain in the First Order's Stormtrooper Corps and had an individual name, which was unusual within the organization. The flametrooper was a devoted soldier and believed that no one was above performing tasks that benefited the First Order. However, he also considered the Order's individual stormtroopers to be less valuable assets, so Bray was willing to put them in harm's way if it meant protecting something considered more important. His loyalty to the First Order also meant he had no reservations about exterminating a native species for the sake of Starkiller Base's future, even believing that the creatures were worthless.
Captain Bray was also prone to anger towards his soldiers. He punished FN-2187 for what he perceived as complaints, and he interrupted FN-2187 when he attempted to explain himself. FN-2187 even believed that Bray assigned him cleanup duty out of spite. Bray also possessed a slight sense of humor, as evidenced by his reaction of "Ow" after being burned by FN-2187.

Bray utilized the standard-issue D-93 Incinerator flamethrower and heat-resistant armor worn by First Order flametroopers. He also wore a pauldron to indicate his rank of captain. His flametrooper helmet was also part of his armor, which he referred to as a "bucket."
Bray made his debut in Age of Resistance - Finn 1, which was written by Tom Taylor and illustrated by Ramon Rosanas. The comic book was released on July 3, 2019.
