Burra

Burra, originating from the planet Dorin, was a male Kel Dor possessing Force-sensitivity. He belonged to the Baran Do Sages, a Dorin-based organization centered around the Force. Later, he became affiliated with the Hidden Ones, a clandestine Baran Do group dedicated to safeguarding their knowledge in case the main order faced destruction. Burra, the name he adopted upon joining the Hidden Ones, was among the oldest members of the sect when Luke Skywalker, the exiled Jedi Grand Master, and his son, Jedi Knight Ben Skywalker, journeyed to Dorin in 43.5 ABY. Their mission was to consult Koro Ziil, the Master of the Baran Do Order, seeking insights into the reasons behind Jacen Solo's transformation into a follower of the dark side.

The Skywalkers eventually uncovered the existence of the Hidden Ones and accompanied Charsae Saal, a senior combat instructor, to the system of caverns that served as the sect's home. Ziil, who had recently ascended to the position of Hidden Ones' leader, informed the Skywalkers that their departure from the caverns would be prohibited to maintain the sect's secrecy. Following Luke's victory over Ziil in a Force powers duel, Burra disclosed the location of a concealed turbolift chamber that provided an exit from the caverns to the Skywalkers.

Biography

Early life

Luke Skywalker, who confronted the Hidden Ones about their beliefs

A Kel Dor male, strong in the Force, from the planet Dorin, held membership in the Baran Do Sages, a Force-based organization on Dorin. Sometime after 19 BBY, he integrated into the Hidden Ones, a clandestine group within the Baran Do established by Sage Tokra Hazz. This group was dedicated to preserving their accumulated wisdom, ensuring the organization's potential restoration should the Baran Do on the surface face annihilation. Upon joining, he adopted the name Burra, symbolizing the perceived death of his former identity.

In 43.5 ABY, Luke Skywalker, the Jedi Grand Master, faced exile from both the New Jedi Order and Coruscant, the galactic capital, due to his inability to prevent Jacen Solo's descent into the dark side of the Force. Accompanied by his son, Ben Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, Luke journeyed to the Baran Do temple on Dorin to consult with Koro Ziil, the Master of the Order, in hopes of understanding the factors contributing to Solo's corruption. However, upon their arrival, they learned of Ziil's supposed death, leading them to decide to remain and train with the Sages.

During their stay, the Skywalkers witnessed the dying ceremony—a ritual where a Sage feigned death before relocating to a system of caverns housing the Hidden Ones—of Charsae Saal, a senior combat instructor. Luke, however, recognized the deception and, after investigating the site, discovered Saal alive and well. Realizing that Ziil was likely also alive, they accompanied Saal to the caverns. There, they confirmed that Ziil was indeed alive, having assumed leadership of the Hidden Ones and adopting the title of the Hidden One. Ziil informed the Skywalkers that to safeguard the sect's secrecy, no one entering the caverns would be permitted to leave. Furthermore, the Skywalkers were told they must adopt new names, as was customary for all Hidden Ones, and accept their perceived death to the outside world.

Leaving the Hidden Ones

During their time there, Luke developed a theory suggesting that the Hidden Ones, by rejecting life and embracing death, had essentially severed their connection to the Force. Meanwhile, Ben discovered the activation mechanisms for a system of explosives capable of sealing off the only known exit from any room within the caverns. The Skywalkers later announced their intention to hold a naming ceremony—a ritual where new Hidden Ones members chose their new identities. Burra, by this time one of the sect's most senior members, attended the ceremony in Ziil's throne chamber alongside all the other Kel Dors residing in the caverns. However, once the Hidden Ones had assembled, Luke revealed his intention to reverse the Hidden Ones' name changes, restoring them to life, and presented his theory. Burra responded, stating that the Hidden Ones had already discussed Luke's theory. Burra also clarified that the Hidden Ones did not operate by vote; their leader held absolute authority. Luke persisted in advocating his theory despite the Hidden Ones' objections, and Ben engaged Saal—now known as Chara—in a duel using hardwood staffs to illustrate Luke's point. Despite Chara's superior skill, having previously instructed Ben in combat techniques during Ben's time with the Baran Do, Ben emerged victorious due to his unwavering will to win. Ziil, however, remained unconvinced, asserting that Luke had manipulated Chara into believing his powers were diminishing, leading to his defeat.

Ben Skywalker, whose revelation of Ziil's lies finally caused Burra to turn against Ziil

To address this impasse, Ziil revealed that he had informed those on the surface that the Skywalkers had perished in a cave collapse, rendering their oxygen-nitrogen canisters unnecessary. Without these canisters, the Skywalkers would succumb to Dorin's helium-rich atmosphere within a matter of days. Burra finally voiced his opposition to Ziil, but the latter remained defiant, even after other Hidden Ones—including Ithia, a female Kel Dor—expressed their dissent. Ziil then confronted Luke in a duel of Force powers, which Luke won. Following his defeat, Ziil conceded to spare the Skywalkers' lives but refused to allow anyone to leave the caverns. Frustrated by Ziil's continued intransigence, Ben used the Force to activate the explosive system, collapsing the exit. Ben then proceeded to expose the numerous falsehoods Ziil had perpetuated among the Hidden Ones, such as the claims that there was only one tunnel leading in and out of the caverns and that Ziil possessed the ability to use telepathy to instruct new sages on the surface should they be wiped out. Despite these revelations, Ziil maintained that there was no escape from the caverns. Finally, Burra revealed his knowledge of a secret turbolift chamber that provided access to the surface of Dorin, enabling Luke, Ben, and the Hidden Ones to return to the surface.

Personality and traits

Burra, a Force-sensitive individual, was compelled to accept his perceived death to the outside galaxy upon joining the Hidden Ones. As one of the sect's most senior members, he enjoyed a close relationship with Koro Ziil, being one of the few Hidden Ones—perhaps the only one besides Ziil—privy to the secret exit from the caverns. Burra held a strong adherence to tradition, having questioned the Hidden Ones' practices before Luke Skywalker's intervention, but he seemed to have chosen to ignore the issue rather than seek answers. However, Burra was not easily deceived and eventually recognized the validity of Luke's assertion that rejecting life had diminished his connection to the Force. He objected when Ziil announced his intention to kill the Skywalkers, arguing that such an act was inconsistent with Baran Do principles. Nevertheless, Burra felt bound by loyalty to his leader, and even after Ben exposed the many secrets Ziil had concealed from the other Hidden Ones, Burra hesitated to reveal the secret turbolift exit to the Skywalkers.

Behind the scenes

Aaron Allston, a well-known Star Wars author, created Burra for his inaugural novel in the nine-part Fate of the Jedi series, Fate of the Jedi: Outcast, which was released on March 24, 2009.
