The concluding battle in the extended pursuit of the Imperial turncoat Kalast culminated in the Empire's apprehension of the treacherous Moff. Kalast had absconded with vital datacodes pertaining to the Galactic Empire's planet-destroying superweapon, known as the Death Star I. The Empire's objective was to capture and punish him for this theft.
The search began on Thyferra, where Kalast commanded a Rebel installation. He managed to escape the base's destruction due to an error in judgment by a commanding Field Commander.
Following the suppression of the Invasion of Fondor, which unfolded during the Imperial Army's absence from the world, Darth Vader contracted Boba Fett to neutralize the defenses surrounding Ilum, where local pirates were providing Kalast with armaments.
After extracting intelligence from the pirate chieftain, the Empire launched an assault on a Rebel support unit from Jabiim during a battle on Jabiim. This yielded information indicating that Kalast possessed a Rebel estate located on Atzerri. Following the Arrest over Atzerri, the renegade Imperial absconded. Darth Vader and Palpatine initiated a series of reconnaissance missions across the galaxy, deploying a fleet that included Immobilizer 418 cruisers to finally capture Kalast.
The Imperial Navy engaged the Rebel Alliance Fleet in a series of skirmishes throughout the galaxy, ranging from Shola to Dantooine and Nal Hutta. They destroyed several Alliance Space Stations in a focused effort to locate him. Although they managed to corner Kalast on multiple occasions, they were unable to capture him. After numerous encounters, the definitive battle commenced, bringing the hunt for Kalast to its conclusion.
Darth Vader discovered one of Kalast's last remaining bastions. The Immobilizer 418 cruisers were activated, preventing his escape. As the fleets exchanged fire, combat vessels ambushed Kalast's flagship, the Avenger, and obliterated its shields and vulnerable points. With the vessel crippled, an Imperial-I-class Star Destroyer moved in and ensnared the Avenger in its tractor beam, securing the ship intact along with Kalast.
Kalast's capture led to the acquisition of crucial Rebel intelligence, including details about the Bothans who aided Kalast in his espionage. This information resulted in many Bothans dying. Nevertheless, the damage was done, and Kalast's actions ultimately contributed to the Rebels destroying the Death Star.
This battle served as the tenth mission within the Imperial campaign of the 2006 video game Star Wars: Empire at War. The specific locations and quantity of intermediate skirmishes can vary significantly depending on the number of systems under Imperial control at this stage of the campaign. For instance, if the Empire controlled every system except for Atzerri, only a single engagement over that system would be necessary. Conversely, if several systems remained under Rebel control, capturing Kalast would prove considerably more challenging, as he could jump between numerous systems, potentially located far apart. However, if the Empire had already conquered all available planets, a game bug would occur: Kalast's fleet would appear in orbit around Coruscant, and the Imperial space station there would revert to Rebel control, making the fight against him difficult if it was of high level.
