Caretakers

The Caretakers, Lanai women residing on Ahch-To, dedicated their lives to the upkeep of the ancient Jedi village situated on that planet. This village was the location of the first Jedi Temple. These women viewed it as a sacred obligation to preserve the ancient structures of Temple Island and to offer assistance to those who journeyed to their remote world in search of enlightenment. Living a modest and unassuming existence, they donned white robes paired with matching head coverings. Their religion mirrored the Jedi Order's concepts of the light side and the dark side of the Force, which they saw reflected in the island's weather patterns. They sought to maintain equilibrium through serenity.

They were accepting of the presence of Luke Skywalker, the former Jedi Master, because his impact on them was minimal and considerate. However, they held a less favorable view of Rey, who they believed disrupted their efforts to properly maintain the island. After Rey created a hole in the hut where she was staying, a pair of Caretakers expressed their annoyance in their native language while attempting to repair the damage. Rey reminded them of the anchorites found on Jakku.

On another occasion, Alcida-Auka and a fellow Caretaker were moving a wheelbarrow along a cliffside path when a falling rock pillar, severed by Rey's lightsaber, destroyed the cart, leaving the matron holding only the handles. Realizing who was likely responsible, the two Lanais looked up at her with exasperated expressions, to which she responded with an apologetic smile.
