Chair of the Senate

The position of Senate Chair was a political appointment within the Galactic Senate of the Galactic Republic. Mas Amedda, a Chagrian politician, occupied this role while concurrently serving as Vice Chair. During his tenure as Senate Chair, Amedda engaged with representatives from the Outer Rim world of Vallt in a committee setting but, instead of addressing their concerns about perceived neglect by the Republic, he grew irritated with them.

Responsibilities

The role of Senate Chair was a political one, assigned to an individual within the Galactic Senate of the Galactic Republic. This individual was tasked with meeting with representatives of member planets of the Republic within a committee framework, intended to facilitate discussions about the challenges those planets faced. However, these discussions did not always lead to resolution. Holding this position concurrently with that of Vice Chancellor, also referred to as Vice Chair or Vice Chair of the Senate, was permissible.

Historical Context

The Chagrian Mas Amedda served as the chair of the Senate.

In 31 BBY, which was the decade preceding the Clone Wars conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Mas Amedda, a Chagrian who also held the position of Vice Chancellor of the Republic, served as Senate Chair. At some point during his time in this capacity, Amedda convened with representatives from the Outer Rim planet of Vallt in a committee session. When these representatives voiced concerns about being overlooked by the Republic, specifically regarding fair representation, respect, and trade, Amedda and the committee failed to provide assistance to the planet, with Amedda even expressing annoyance and dismissing the people of Vallt as a disgruntled faction.

By 21 BBY, Amedda was no longer Senate Chair, but remained the Vice Chancellor. When Vallt joined the Confederacy of Independent Systems, gaining the benefits it had lacked under the Republic, Lieutenant Commander Orson Krennic informed Amedda that Galen Erso, a scientist, was on Vallt and could be instrumental in completing a covert initiative. Amedda displayed irritation at the mention of Vallt, recalling his prior experience with the planet during his time as Senate Chair.

Behind the Curtains

The existence of the Senate Chair was initially referenced within current Star Wars canon in the 2016 novel Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel authored by James Luceno. The title "Chair of the Senate" originated in the 1996 Star Wars Legends novel Before the Storm by Michael P. Kube-McDowell. Within the Legends continuity, this title denoted one of the leaders of the New Republic's senate, with the other being the Chief of State. The title also appeared in the senate of the Galactic Alliance, the New Republic's successor.
