The cult known as the Children of the Empty Sun functioned on the planet of Catadra, situated within the Cerberon system, and were under the leadership of Let'ij. Chass na Chadic, a pilot from the New Republic, found herself adrift in space close to Catadra during the New Republic's campaign to seize control of the Cerberon system. Cult members rescued her. Suspecting that another New Republic person was with the cult, Chadic chose to become a member. However, her suspicion was wrong; the cult had actually saved Palal Seedia, an Imperial pilot. Chadic and Seedia reluctantly collaborated to get away from Catadra, finding the cult's starships. Seedia betrayed the New Republic pilot and abandoned her, but Chadic managed to get back her B-wing starfighter and flee.
The novel Shadow Fall: An Alphabet Squadron Novel, which Alexander Freed penned in 2020 as the second book in the Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron trilogy, featured the Children of the Empty Sun. Freed's initial overarching plans for the trilogy included the cult, as well as Chadic's interactions with them and the resulting character development.
