These droids played a significant role in communication technologies during the High Republic period, with organizations such as the Republic Defense Coalition and various others employing them. These droids were capable of displaying transmitted images onto specially designed surfaces called commwalls. Notably, Admiral Pevel Kronara utilized a comms droid to maintain contact with Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh throughout the Great Hyperspace Disaster.
During the reign of the Galactic Empire, a large network of communication droids was utilized by Sector Plexus, the communications center for Imperial Intelligence. A communications droid example is PZ-4CO, a protocol droid manufactured by Serv-O-Droid, Inc. who assisted the Resistance during their war against the First Order. Another example is Iris, a spherical, floating droid colored black, who served Captain Cardinal of the First Order as a communications droid. She had the ability to operate video cameras and internal sensors on the Absolution, a Resurgent-class Star Destroyer, in addition to providing fundamental medical data about individuals in close proximity.
