To decipher the forbidden languages inscribed on a Sith dagger, C-3PO experienced a total redacted memory bypass. A complete redacted memory bypass represented a procedure applicable to a droid to extract translations of restricted languages that were stored within the droid's memory banks. The protocol droid known as C-3PO viewed this procedure as incredibly perilous and immoral, asserting that only the lowest of society and criminals would execute it on unsuspecting droids. However, in 35 ABY, he consented to undergo this process to decipher the inscriptions found on a Sith dagger. This bypass was conducted by the droidsmith Babu Frik on the planet Kijimi, who connected numerous wires to the rear of C-3PO's head as part of the process. The operation allowed C-3PO to successfully access the forbidden translation, but it also led to the protocol droid experiencing a complete memory wipe. Subsequently, C-3PO's memories were recovered from a backup.
The concept of a complete redacted memory bypass initially appeared in the 2019 sequel trilogy movie, Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker.
