Cuata, a Pantoran male, possessed extensive knowledge concerning kyber crystals. Prior to the perils the Clone Wars brought to Mygeeto and Christophsis, he conducted investigations on these planets, capturing the attention of the scientist Galen Erso. The Galactic Empire later enlisted Cuata to contribute to the Death Star's superlaser design; however, he escaped following the mysterious disappearances of several coworkers. Aided by Gretta, he successfully returned to Christophsis, where he remained for a period.
Sometime between 3 ABY and 4 ABY, the kyber crystal within the lightsaber wielded by Luke Skywalker, a Jedi-in-training, was damaged. Cuata, in return for Skywalker mending a bled kyber crystal he possessed, consented to repair and fortify Skywalker's lightsaber crystal.
