After West End Games relinquished their license to produce Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, Wizards of the Coast began releasing their rendition of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game in November of 2000. The series concluded in April 2010 with the publication of The Unknown Regions.
The game's fundamental rules, as presented in the core rulebook, are built upon the d20 System, which was also employed in the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Gameplay involves a gamemaster, who controls the game world and acts as both director and referee, and other players, each assuming the role of a single character possessing various skills and equipment, with some even capable of wielding the Force. Supplementary sourcebooks for this version of the game offer expanded background details and statistics for numerous elements of the Star Wars universe, encompassing specifics on starships, guidelines for incorporating additional aliens, thorough information on the Jedi order and dark side Force practitioners, and details concerning regions of the galaxy, such as the Core Worlds or the Outer Rim.
In 2002, coinciding with the theatrical debut of Episode II, a Revised Core Rulebook was launched, introducing updates to several of the game's rules and statistical data. Subsequent publications adopted this refined rules system, while maintaining compatibility with earlier releases. Wizards of the Coast ceased producing new books for the Revised Edition following Ultimate Adversaries in June 2004, shifting their focus to the Star Wars Miniatures line. This decision stemmed from Wizards' agreement with Lucasfilm, which restricted the number of Star Wars products Wizards could release annually, coupled with the greater profitability of the miniatures line compared to the roleplaying game.
A fresh iteration of the roleplaying game, known as the Saga Edition, saw its release on June 5, 2007. At the Celebration IV convention of that year, attendees could acquire a complimentary copy of the Saga Edition by uttering "Let the Wookiee win" to coauthor Rodney Thompson at the Wizards of the Coast booth. Further sourcebooks, including The Force Unleashed Campaign Guide and the revised Starships of the Galaxy, contributed supplementary content and rules, encompassing guidelines for organizations, starship maneuvers, and expansive cinematic combat scenarios. Subsequently, thirteen sourcebooks were developed over the ensuing three years, representing a substantial collection of new Star Wars roleplaying materials. These sourcebooks provide a wealth of background information, alongside additional rules and statistics. A particularly noteworthy example is the Jedi Academy Training Manual, which dedicates a significant portion to diverse Force traditions. Similarly, the Galaxy at War sourcebook features a chapter concentrating on military groups. In contrast, the Scavenger's Guide to Droids sourcebook is predominantly focused on background material, with a comparatively smaller emphasis on rules.
On January 28th, 2010, Wizards of the Coast made public their decision to terminate their Star Wars license following the publication of The Unknown Regions. The Saga Edition Role Playing Game, along with the Star Wars Miniatures line, concluded with the release of that particular sourcebook. In 2011, Fantasy Flight Games acquired the license to publish roleplaying content, subsequently releasing Star Wars: Edge of the Empire.
Wizards of the Coast offered complimentary web-based supplements for the roleplaying game on Wizards.com, and their roleplaying advice column, Jedi Counseling, persisted through 2009. These supplemental materials were removed from the Wizards website after the license's expiration.
