A male human named Dak Ralter, originating from Kalist VI, fought for the Alliance to Restore the Republic as a pilot during the Galactic Civil War. Motivated by a strong sense of idealism, he enlisted in the Rebel Alliance with the goal of reinstating the Republic and dismantling the Galactic Empire. As a part of Rogue Squadron, he quickly formed a bond with Thane Kyrell in the time leading up to the Battle of Hoth. In anticipation of the conflict, he expressed great enthusiasm about collaborating with Luke Skywalker, a celebrated figure he had only heard stories about. During the battle, he served as Skywalker's gunner and ultimately died when their snowspeeder was struck and forced to crash-land directly in the path of an AT-AT. Skywalker managed to get out of the destroyed vehicle just before the walker's foot came down on the speeder, killing Ralter.
The character of Dak Ralter made his debut in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, which was released in 1980 and is the second movie in the Star Wars original trilogy. John Morton played him in the film, with his role credited simply as "Dak (Luke's Gunner)."
