This particular specimen of a damaged Viper probe droid represented a model of Viper probe droid utilized by the forces of the Galactic Empire. It suffered damage and became marooned, still contained within its transport pod, close to the Saila Na system sometime in the general timeframe of the Battle of Hoth, a crucial engagement during the Galactic Civil War fought between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic.
Following the Battle of Hospital which took place in 3 ABY, Aeron Azzameen set her sights on this droid after discovering its existence and a plot to seize it by slicing into communication networks. Her objective was to secure the damaged droid and leverage its sensor capabilities and internal components to aid her family's ongoing dispute between their company and their corporate adversaries, Viraxo Industries. To accomplish the retrieval of the droid, she dispatched her brother Ace along with the family's droid companion MK-09 aboard the family's YT-2000 light freighter, known as the Otana. However, the pirate transport vessel Pelican also had intentions to scavenge the droid; this transport, accompanied by several R-41 Starchaser fighters, arrived at the location of the damaged probe droid before the Otana. Before the pirates could depart with their prize, the Otana destroyed the entire group, and Ace claimed the probe droid for himself.
After successfully acquiring the probe droid, the Otana proceeded towards the civilian checkpoint located at the orbital platform Tinoon Station, carrying the droid as cargo. Driven by a fear of being detected, Ace devised a plan to bypass the checkpoint illegally and escape the system. The arrival of a pirate contingent, consisting of Marauder-class corvettes and Y-wing starfighters, created a significant diversion, and Ace took on the arriving pirates. Following a successful clash involving the pirates, the Otana, and the Golan II Space Defense SpaceGun stationed at Tinoon Station, the Otana and its cargo pod containing the probe droid were granted passage without undergoing inspection.
