The dark purple traveling dress is a Naboo clothing item that was donned by Queen Amidala. Its design featured purple cerlin sleeves, complemented by shoulder embellishments situated on the darker purple velvet overdress. The complete ensemble included an old-fashioned tiara displaying the Naboo royal emblem and a mauve chersilk hair veil that had two hanging sections in the front, interwoven with drapa bindings.
During the Trade Federation's Invasion of Naboo, Amidala journeyed to Coruscant, the capital of the Galactic Republic, to implore the Galactic Senate for assistance. Despite her best efforts, Amidala was unable to get help from the Republic quickly enough to save her people. On the journey back to Naboo aboard her royal starship, her handmaiden Sabé aided her in getting dressed, while the other handmaidens packed the queen's wardrobe. Amidala chose to wear the somber traveling gown as a sign of solidarity with her suffering people, and she wore it again at the funeral for the Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn, who lost his life defending Naboo.
The dark purple traveling dress was designed for the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, part of the prequel trilogy. Costume designer Trisha Biggar and her team brought the finished costume to life. The paneled velvet overdress featured a discharge-printed Naboo pattern and was secured at the shoulders and neck using velvet buttons that matched. It opened to reveal a pleated silk underdress, worn over multiple layers of stiffened petticoats. Beneath the overdress were petal-shaped undersleeves, crafted from a double layer of shot-silk chiffon satin, along with fitted, finger-length corded inner sleeves. Chiffon was used to create the veils, while the headdress was made of gold and bore the embossed Naboo emblem.
