The dark science laboratory was situated inside the sprawling Sith Citadel on the planet of Exegol. The Sith Eternal, a Sith cult that pledged allegiance to the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, utilized this lab for purposes of genetic manipulation. Sidious, completely consumed by a desire to achieve immortality, had long viewed bioengineering and cloning technologies as possible avenues toward achieving everlasting life. Consequently, the Dark Lord of the Sith charged his subordinates with the daunting task of both creating and maintaining an organic being strong in the Force, intending for it to serve as a suitable vessel to contain Sidious' dark essence.
During this endeavor, the Sith Eternal combined technology with the arcane arts to generate unnatural manifestations of the dark side. A multitude of strandcasts were brought into existence within the laboratory's profane machinery, though many of these creations resulted in grotesque and deformed failures, deemed unfit to house Sidious' god-like consciousness. After considerable experimentation and numerous setbacks, they eventually achieved a partially successful result—the Force-sensitive being known as Snoke. Sidious later positioned Snoke as the puppet ruler of the First Order, acting in Sidious' place. Despite Snoke's disfigured appearance and physical weakness, the strandcast fulfilled its intended function as Sidious' representative, ultimately training the young Ben Solo in the ways of the dark side of the Force. Several cloned copies of Snoke were preserved within the lab, contained within tubes filled with nutrient-rich fluid and attended to by Sith cultists.
The Sith Citadel laboratory made its debut in the 2019 motion picture Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, which was the third movie in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Later, in 2022, this setting was featured in the video game LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Here, players can engage in a brief minigame titled "Build-a-Snoke," where they match three different body parts to complete Snoke's attire, unlocking Snoke as a playable character upon completion. In a cutscene, the infamous Jar Jar Binks is visible inside a clone vat, giving a wave to Kylo Ren.
