The Darshi, also known as Thinfaces by the inhabitants of Batuu, were a prosperous sentient species in the service of the aggressive Grysk from the Unknown Regions. Thrawn theorized that the Darshi existed as a border society, traversing both Wild Space and the Unknown Regions. The Chiss Ascendancy had not extensively studied Darshi culture, and accounts did not depict them as prone to violence. Consequently, the Darshi were generally not perceived as outwardly aggressive, according to available records. Conversely, their physical characteristics suggested a capacity for violence: the Darshi possessed sharp claws suitable for combat, while their slender frames and heads offered a degree of protection.
Approximately 174 days prior to a skirmish on Batuu where Darshi forces engaged Thrawn and Darth Vader, a Darshi group landed on planet Batuu, asserting that they were on a pilgrimage. This group erected dwellings to the east of Black Spire Outpost, citing the necessity of remaining on Batuu for a prolonged time to complete their journey. Following the construction of their residences, they engaged in three days of meditating in the northern forests, and their ships, constantly arriving and departing on mysterious missions to unknown locations, congested Black Spire Outpost.
This led to the departure of merchants, discouraged ship landings, and the abandonment of Batuu by others. While the Darshi generously compensated for the best food and supplies, certain Batuu residents, particularly business owners, remained dissatisfied. Eighteen days before the conflict, a fresh contingent of Darshi arrived, bringing with them ten "coffins".
