A portion of the destroyed Death Star, after its demise, came to rest within the oceans of Kef Bir, a moon found in the Endor system. Following the cataclysmic destruction of the second Death Star in 4 ABY during the Battle of Endor, fragments of the formidable [superweapon](/article/superweapon], notably the Emperor's Throne Room where his wayfinder was stored, plummeted onto Kef Bir's surface.
In 35 ABY, Rey, the Jedi, along with her fellow Resistance members, undertook a journey to this moon. Their purpose was to locate a wayfinder that could guide them to the resurrected Darth Sidious's hidden stronghold situated on the planet Exegol, found deep within the uncharted Unknown Regions. It was there that she engaged in a decisive confrontation with Kylo Ren, the dark warrior and Supreme Leader of the First Order, a battle that ultimately led to his return to the light side of the Force.

Following the superweapon's demise during the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, pieces of the second [Death Star](/article/death_star] impacted Kef Bir. These fragments included portions of the northern pole and the southern end of the battle station's superlaser lens's curved surface. The remnants of the Emperor's Throne Room were also among the debris, including a vault within the Throne Room itself, where Darth Sidious had kept his Jedi and Sith artifacts. Over time, the ocean's ocean waters eroded and saturated the Death Star's wreckage, rendering it structurally precarious.
When the survivors of Company 77, a company of stormtroopers who had abandoned the First Order, established a settlement on Kef Bir, they repurposed Imperial technology. This salvaged tech enabled them to fashion the tools and equipment necessary for enduring the moon's challenging environment.

After a successful strike against the Death Star II's reactor during the Endor conflict, the destroyed battle station's remains subsequently descended onto the surface of Kef Bir, the oceanic ocean moon. The Alliance Fleet had also deployed tractor beams and shields to safeguard the forest moon from the falling wreckage.

In 35 ABY, Rey, the Jedi, arrived at Kef Bir and its wreckage during her quest to discover the Emperor's wayfinder. This artifact was essential for finding the resurrected Darth Sidious's stronghold on Exegol, a planet within the Unknown Regions. While there, Rey confronted a manifestation of the dark side of the Force, appearing as a Force vision of herself. This "Dark Rey" vision, encountered within the Emperor's former throne room, showed Rey a possible future where she had embraced the dark side. Nevertheless, Rey successfully located the wayfinder. However, before she could retrieve it and rejoin her allies, her adversary Kylo Ren destroyed it.
The two dueled on top of the ruins. Ren was momentarily distracted, sensing the death of his mother, Leia Organa. This lapse allowed Rey to gain the upper hand and wound him. Rey then used the Force to heal him and commandeered his TIE/wi modified interceptor, leaving him stranded amidst the Death Star II's wreckage. Ren then engaged in a conversation with a memory of his father, Han Solo, which prompted him to reject the dark side. He cast his weapon into the surrounding ocean and reclaimed his former identity as Ben Solo. To escape the moon and accompany Rey during her confrontation with Darth Sidious, Solo located a TIE scout starfighter that had survived the Death Star's destruction. He then piloted it out of the ruins and departed Kef Bir.
The Death Star wreckage made its initial appearance in the 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, the concluding installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
The 2019 novel Force Collector by Kevin Shinick, which was part of the Journey to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker publishing initiative, originally depicted the protagonist Karr Nuq Sin visiting the Death Star's remains, mirroring Rey's experience in Episode IX. According to Shinick, he unintentionally incorporated this similar journey into the novel's first draft. He was subsequently informed that this aspect needed revision to prevent overlapping with The Rise of Skywalker approximately a year before the book's release and the film's premiere.
