Deceived is the inaugural trailer that BioWare unveiled for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Initially launched on June 1, 2009, Deceived was completely brought to life using photorealistic CGI by Blur Studio for BioWare and LucasArts, incorporating motion-capture technology and meticulously planned fight sequences. A 4K version of the trailer was subsequently re-released on November 6, 2021.

In the year 3653 BBY, a shuttle makes its way towards Coruscant. Concurrently, a figure draped in black—Darth Malgus—accompanied by his female Twi'lek companion, Eleena Daru, ascends the steps of the Jedi Temple. They encounter several members of the Temple Security Force. Malgus, brandishing a red lightsaber, swiftly eliminates the guards using rapid strikes and the Force. Above the main entrance, a woman in a crouched position, Shae Vizla, receives Malgus' signal and penetrates the Temple's upper levels with her jetpack. Vizla then uses her blaster to dispatch additional guards, while also consulting the holographic display on her gauntlet to track the shuttle's progress. Malgus and Daru enter the Temple unhurriedly, where they are confronted by more than a dozen Jedi, including Jedi Master Ven Zallow, who surround them with ignited lightsabers. As planned, the shuttle crashes violently through the Temple's entrance, demolishing ancient stone pillars before halting behind Malgus. The shuttle's ramp extends, revealing another cloaked figure who ignites a red lightsaber; moving forward, the darkness behind him is illuminated by the activation of over twenty more crimson blades.
These Sith Warriors, under the command of Lord Adraas, swarm from the shuttle, engaging the Jedi Knights in a battle that quickly engulfs the Temple's entrance hall. Jedi and Sith alike are slain in the conflict. Daru fires at Jedi from beside the Sith Lord before seeking refuge behind a pillar. Vizla traverses the Temple with her jetpack, using rockets and flamethrowers to eliminate Temple guards who are trying to aid the besieged Jedi. Malgus cuts down numerous Jedi with his lightsaber, attacks others with blasts of Force lightning, and even hurls a Jedi with his bare hands. Ven Zallow, who had previously fought Malgus, uses a Force push to slam the Twi'lek woman into a fallen column before charging to attack Malgus head-on. Soon after, a Sith warrior destroys the floor around him, sending guards flying.

In the meantime, Malgus overpowers two nearby Jedi just before Zallow confronts him. The two engage in a duel amidst the ongoing chaotic battle. When Zallow leans back to avoid a fatal overhead strike, Malgus kicks him several feet backward. Zallow uses this brief respite to strike down two approaching Sith warriors. Malgus throws his lightsaber, which Zallow leaps over, only to be struck by a powerful Force push that sends him crashing through rubble. Malgus retrieves his lightsaber while leaping over the debris, attempting to impale Zallow as he lies on the ground. However, the Jedi recovers quickly and evades the Sith Lord's killing blow by jumping away. He retaliates with a rapid series of strikes, stunning Malgus with an elbow to the face. When his following swing misses and he spins to build momentum for another strike, Malgus rushes in and impales Zallow through the torso, declaring that the Jedi had been deceived by the Sith, leading to the fall of the Republic.
Defeated, the Jedi Master collapses to his knees as Malgus turns away, deactivating his lightsaber. In his final moments, the master gazes at the burning cityscape as Sith starfighters fly overhead, Sith war droid Mark IIs march up the Temple steps, and Sith warships dominate the distant sky. He falls forward as the starfighters unleash a barrage of laser cannonfire on the Temple and the surrounding district, creating pillars of thick smoke. Malgus exits the Temple as spires and statues collapse behind him, raising his hood as the Temple is consumed by flames.
The 3:53 minute cinematic trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic, entitled "Deceived," was initially presented to the public on June 1, 2009. Dave Wilson directed it, and Blur Studio developed it on behalf of BioWare and LucasArts. With narration by Darth Malgus, the trailer portrays the Sith's infiltration of the Jedi Temple during the Sacking of Coruscant.
External resources were utilized for fight choreography and motion capture during the creation process, and Skywalker Sound handled the sound track mixing. The use of concept artwork provided by BioWare, along with high-resolution models of the Jedi Temple and spacecraft from Industrial Light and Magic, enabled Blur to create an authentic and believable trailer firmly grounded in the Star Wars universe. Several John Williams' themes from the classic and prequel trilogies have been interwoven to create the trailer's musical score. It draws heavily on themes from Revenge of the Sith and cues from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords.
