Delevar

Corporal Delevar, a Human male, was a member of the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War. He received training as both a medic and a scout, and served under General Crix Madine's command within SpecForces. In the year 3 ABY, he found himself stationed at Echo Base, the Alliance High Command's base of operations located on the icy planet Hoth. After surviving the Battle of Hoth, Delevar rejoined the Alliance Fleet, where he remained for a year. In 4 ABY, the Alliance discovered the Galactic Empire was in the process of constructing a second Death Star in orbit around the forest moon of Endor. They decided to launch an attack against the superweapon while it was still under construction. Crucially, a powerful energy shield, generated by a facility situated on the moon's surface, protected the partially completed battle station. To address this, a strike team was assembled with the mission to infiltrate the moon and disable the shield generator. Delevar volunteered for this perilous assignment. Despite Major Bren Derlin, the unit's commanding officer, viewing him as a relatively inexperienced soldier, General Madine strongly endorsed Delevar's inclusion.

Aboard the Alliance flagship Home One, Delevar attended a briefing where Madine outlined the planned assault. Subsequently, he journeyed to Endor aboard the stolen Imperial Lambda-class T-4a shuttle known as the Tydirium. Following a brush with an Imperial scout trooper patrol, Delevar and the strike team separated from the command element led by the former smuggler General Han Solo. Adhering to orders to meet up with the General at 0300 hours, the strike team evaded Imperial patrols until they encountered an All Terrain Scout Transport while setting up camp for the night. Utilizing a Caspel launcher, Delevar skillfully fired a smoke canister directly into the open cockpit of the walker, forcing its crew to abandon the vehicle. Later, Delevar took part in the ground conflict of the Battle of Endor, which resulted in the shield generator's destruction, thereby enabling Alliance starfighters to obliterate the Death Star.

Biography

Service on Hoth

Delevar, a male Human, held the rank of corporal and functioned as a medic and scout within the SpecForces branch of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. In 3 ABY, he was stationed at Echo Base, which served as the Alliance High Command headquarters on the frozen planet Hoth, and actively participated in the Battle of Hoth. Despite the Galactic Empire's overwhelming victory over the Alliance forces, Delevar managed to survive the battle and successfully evacuate the planet. He was then assigned to the main Alliance Fleet after that engagement.

Briefing and infiltration

A year later, Delevar volunteered his services to a strike team being assembled under the leadership of General Han Solo. Though Major Bren Derlin, the team's ground-based unit commander, considered him a novice soldier, General Crix Madine, the commander of the Alliance's SpecForces, strongly vouched for him. The team's purpose was to disable an Imperial facility located on the surface of the forest moon Endor. This facility projected a potent energy shield that protected the second Death Star, which was under construction in orbit around the moon. The Alliance, having learned of the Death Star's location through the efforts of the Bothan Spynet, and of the fact that Emperor Palpatine would be present during the final stages of construction, decided to strike at the battle station. However, any successful attack hinged on deactivating the shield before their arrival.

Delevar, along with the rest of the commandos, attended a briefing on the Alliance flagship Home One, sitting in the front row of the semi-circular amphitheater, where General Madine detailed the team's planned operation. They were to infiltrate the Endor system using a stolen Imperial Lambda-class T4 shuttle, the Tydirium, and a secret Imperial code that would grant them passage through the military checkpoints.

Equipped with standard commando gear, including jungle fatigues and pack, a standard comlink, a low-feedback scanner, a sensor scrambler, macrobinoculars, and a heavily muffled blaster, Delevar joined the rest of the unit aboard the Tydirium. The team also carried an E-Web heavy repeating blaster and a Caspel launcher. The Tydirium, piloted by General Solo and his Wookiee co-pilot Chewbacca, departed from the Alliance Fleet in the Sullust system and headed directly for the Endor system. Upon arrival, the shuttle was questioned by the Star Dreadnought Executor, which was in orbit around the moon. The stolen Imperial code allowed them to pass through the military lines, although they were unaware that Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith, had sensed the presence of his son, Luke Skywalker, aboard the shuttle and had deliberately allowed them to proceed.

Landing on Endor

After landing in a forest clearing, General Solo began leading the strike team toward their objective. Shortly after setting out, the team encountered an Imperial scout trooper patrol consisting of Sergeant Elsek and Corporal Avarik. Although Solo and Chewbacca attempted to subdue the patrol discreetly, Avarik was alerted to Solo's presence when the Alliance general stepped on a twig. Backhanding Solo, Avarik yelled for his partner to summon reinforcements. Elsek mounted his speeder bike and tried to escape, but Chewbacca destroyed his vehicle with several shots from his bowcaster. However, the commotion alerted another pair of scout troopers, who sped off into the forest on their own speeder bikes. Skywalker, accompanied by Princess Leia Organa, who had volunteered to join the mission's command crew, took Avarik's bike and pursued them.

Delevar, along with the rest of the squad, waited at the location of the initial patrol encounter until Skywalker returned. When it became clear that Skywalker and Organa had become separated during the chase, and that the princess had not returned with the young Jedi, Solo decided to take the command crew and search for her. However, mindful of the mission's objective, he instructed Major Derlin to continue onward and rendezvous at the target at 0300 hours. Derlin led the squad toward the shield generator, aware that more Imperial patrols lay between them and their objective. Several times, the squad encountered patrols and managed to remain hidden. However, Delevar nearly compromised their position by preparing to fire at a speeder bike. Derlin intervened in time and reprimanded the commando for his reckless action.

At nightfall, Derlin ordered the squad to set up camp in a shallow ravine, well-protected by underbrush. After posting two sentries and establishing a blanket grid with the scanning equipment, the squad settled down to rest. Shortly after the first sleeping shift began, the scanners detected a large target approaching their position. Derlin suspected that the contact was an All Terrain Scout Transport, a suspicion confirmed when its twin spotlights were spotted in the distance. Ordering the squad to take cover, he hoped the AT-ST would pass them by. When it became clear that it wouldn't, Derlin ordered Corporal Dansra Beezer, the squad's communications expert and slicer, to jam its transmissions. Lieutenant Greeve, the squad's sharpshooter, disabled both spotlights with precise shots from his A280 blaster rifle. To keep the scout walker off balance, Derlin ordered the squad to circle it, although he feared the walker pilot would simply start firing into the forest now that his vehicle was blind and deaf.

True to Derlin's fears, the scout walker began firing randomly into the trees and foliage. Delevar, aware that the battle could alert other Imperial forces in the area, grabbed the squad's Caspel launcher and loaded a smoke canister into it. Moving into a trench in front of the walker, Delevar carefully aimed at the face of the cockpit. Derlin, believing the launcher contained an explosive round and fearing the resulting explosion would definitely alert the Imperials to their location, shouted at Delevar to stop. Knowing exactly what he was doing, the commando ignored the order and fired the grenade straight through the cockpit window. The resulting explosion of smoke forced the walker pilots to abandon the vehicle, surrendering with tears streaming from their eyes. The squad captured the pilots and forced them to make a comm check-in at blasterpoint. With this accomplished, Derlin approached Delevar. The major, affecting a growl, told the commando that if he ever did anything like that again, he was to inform him first. Then, he slapped Delevar on the shoulder and congratulated him on a job well done.

Victory on the forest moon

Delevar and the squad continued to the rendezvous point, forcing the walker pilot to make several more check-ins along the way to explain the scout walker's absence. At 0300 hours, the squad met up with Solo and the command crew, who had formed an alliance with a native tribe of Ewoks, the moon's indigenous species. After an initial reconnaissance of the target, the Ewok scouts informed General Solo and the strike team that there was a secret entrance to the bunker on the other side of the ridge. Although the entrance was guarded by four scout troopers, one of the Ewoks, Paploo, stole one of the guards' speeder bikes. Three of the four troopers gave chase, leaving one behind to guard the door. General Solo and the strike team took the trooper prisoner and subsequently infiltrated the bunker to plant their explosives.

However, the entire mission had been orchestrated by the Emperor himself as a trap for the Alliance. He had allowed the Alliance to obtain intelligence on the Death Star and the location of the shield generator, and had arranged for an entire legion of troops to be stationed on the moon. Delevar and the strike team were captured by Imperial forces lying in wait, both inside and outside the bunker. With the shield still active, the incoming Alliance Fleet could not attack the Death Star's reactor core as planned, forcing them into a protracted engagement with a large Imperial fleet led by the Star Dreadnought Executor.

The Ewok tribe that the command crew had befriended rescued Delevar and the strike team. Retaking the offensive, the Rebels and the Ewoks engaged the Imperial forces in battle around the bunker. During the fight, Chewbacca managed to commandeer an AT-ST, and Solo used its communications system to fool the bunker personnel into opening the back door with a fake message claiming the Rebel forces had been routed. Able to access the bunker once more, Solo and the strike team planted proton grenades in the structure. The resulting explosion destroyed the shield generator installation, which in turn allowed Alliance starfighters to destroy the Death Star by targeting its reactor core.

Personality and traits

Despite being an experienced soldier, Delevar was considered a "rookie" by other members of the strike team, including Major Derlin. This perception was reinforced when he almost compromised the team's cover on the Endor mission by attempting to fire at a speeder bike. Nevertheless, he took pride in being an effective soldier within General Madine's commando organization. He remained calm when facing an AT-ST and possessed enough tactical awareness to recognize that a smoke canister would disable the scout walker's crew without causing a significant disturbance.

Skills and abilities

Like all commandos assigned to the strike team, Delevar had extensive training in using blasters and explosives. He was also trained in using a Caspel launcher and was an experienced medic.

Equipment

Delevar and the rest of the Endor strike team were equipped with basic commando gear, which included a standard comlink, a low-feedback scanner, a sensor scrambler, a heavily muffled blaster, and full-forest-camouflage fatigues.

Behind the scenes

Delevar made his first appearance in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi as an unnamed commando during the briefing scene aboard Home One. In Galaxy Guide 5: Return of the Jedi, published in 1990, a commando named Delevar appeared in the short text story Night Attack. It wasn't until the 1999 release of the "Endor Limited" expansion for the Star Wars Customizable Card Game that the unnamed commando from the briefing was identified as Delevar.

Galaxy Guide 5: Return of the Jedi states that Delevar was a rookie at the time of the Battle of Endor. However, his Star Wars Customizable Card Game entry from the Endor Limited set states that he was a veteran of the Battle of Hoth. The Official Star Wars Fact File's entry on the strike team asserts that while Delevar was an experienced soldier, he was still considered a rookie by the rest of the team.

According to Leland Chee's blog on StarWars.com, he speculated that Decipher used pictures of the same actor to represent Delevar and Sergeant Brooks Carlson on their respective CCG cards. Carlson was portrayed by stuntman Alf Joint, who was uncredited in the role.
