Destruction of Otoh Sancture

The razing of Otoh Sancture constituted an assault upon the Gungan city known as Otoh Sancture, which was situated on the planet of Naboo. This event unfolded during the war that erupted among the diverse tribes of the amphibious Gungan race, an occurrence dated to 3000 BBY. Prior to its obliteration, Otoh Sancture existed as a haven of peace, with its leader, Boss Gallo, adopting a pacifistic approach to the conflict, declining to engage in combat against fellow Gungans. However, this stance aroused concern in Boss Rogoe, the Gungan Boss who orchestrated the war, as he feared that Gallo's involvement could dramatically shift the war's trajectory. To forestall such a possibility, Rogoe commanded a colony of bursas, a perilous semi-sentient species indigenous to Naboo, to lay waste to Otoh Sancture and eliminate Gallo.

As fate would have it, Gallo was absent from the city, engaged in a hunt for creatures to be used in the Sacred Feast, a Gungan celebration akin to thanksgiving, when the bursas descended upon and annihilated the city. Observing the assault from a distance, Gallo grieved over the loss of his city, unaware of the identity of the perpetrator. He then sought refuge in the forests, where he discovered Rogoe's culpability in the city's destruction. This revelation spurred him to assemble a small army to reclaim the ruins of Otoh Sancture from the bursas, thus commencing his campaign to vanquish Boss Rogoe, unify the Gungans, and restore peace to Naboo.

Introduction

Otoh Sancture before its destruction

Back in the year of 3000 BBY, a significant war unfolded on the planet of Naboo, characterized by relentless infighting among the amphibious Gungan tribes. Otoh Sancture stood apart as the sole Gungan city that refused to participate in the war, a position championed by Boss Gallo, the city's leader, who maintained that Gungans should not engage in killing each other. However, Gallo's neutrality caused concern for Boss Rogoe, the warlord who secretly manipulated the war for his personal gain, because he believed that he would be destroyed if Gallo chose to intervene. As a preemptive measure, Rogoe dispatched a colony of carnivorous semi-sentient bursas, under his control, to attack Otoh Sancture, overseen by one of his militiagungs. At that time, the city was on the verge of commencing its Sacred Feast, a Gungan celebration of thanksgiving dedicated to the Guds, the Gungan deities. Tradition dictated that Gallo, in his capacity as Boss of Otoh Sancture, was to venture into the forests to procure nerfs, antlered creatures deemed suitable for the feast. Consequently, Gallo's hunt placed him away from the city when the bursas launched their attack.

The Devastation

The bursa assault on the city commenced shortly after its Boss departed. Gallo returned to discover his city was under attack but found he was not able to get past the river crossing between the forests and his city. The inhabitants of Otoh Sancture were completely unaware of the reasons behind the bursa's targeting of their city. These creatures wrought havoc throughout Otoh Sancture; no Gungans survived, and the city's glurrgs, non-sentient laborers employed in most Gungan cities, also perished. Ultimately, Gallo was compelled to retreat into the forest as the bursas continued to demolish the city.

The Fallout

Gallo retakes Otoh Sancture.

The bursas responsible for the city's destruction established nests within the ruins. Upon retreating into the forests, Gallo encountered Captain Marsune, a renegade Gungan to whom Gallo recounted the destruction of his city. He also crossed paths with Rogoe's militiagung, who had inadvertently lingered in the area for an extended period. When questioned by Gallo, the militiagung denied responsibility for the Destruction of Otoh Sancture, identifying Rogoe as the perpetrator and elucidating the warlord's motives. Following that encounter, Gallo reconstructed Otoh Sancture in a new location and eventually assembled an army of sufficient size to defeat the bursas inhabiting Otoh Sancture's remains. Marsune then rejoined Gallo in his campaign to vanquish Rogoe and unite the Gungan tribes, a goal they ultimately achieved. Gallo subsequently erected Otoh Gunga, the Gungan capital city, as a memorial to those who perished in Otoh Sancture. The events surrounding Gallo's struggle against Rogoe, including the Destruction of Otoh Sancture, were later chronicled by Gallo's descendant Rugor Nass.

Behind the Curtains

The destruction of Otoh Sancture was initially referenced in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds: Prima's Official Strategy Guide by Steven L. Kent,—released on November 7, 2001—before its inclusion in the LucasArts video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, which was released on November 11, 2001. Within the game, it serves as the inaugural event in the Gungan campaign, specifically in the level titled "Otoh Sancture." At the level's commencement, the player's control is limited to Boss Gallo, who is positioned on the opposite side of a river from Otoh Sancture, effectively preventing direct access to the city. The bursa attack is triggered upon the player's discovery of the nerfs and concludes upon reaching Marsune's camp. The battle's name is disclosed in Marsune's entry within the game's DataBank.
