Dybrinthe

The Dybrinthe were a sentient species of humanoids who originated from the moon Dybrin 12, located in the Deep Core. Given the highly pressurized and toxic conditions of the moon's atmosphere, Dybrinthe who ventured beyond Dybrin 12 were compelled to use sizable helmets along with breathing gear.

Biology and appearance

As a species, Dybrinthe were humanoid and bipedal, characterized by bright skin, large eyes, and a respiratory system that resembled gills. Their hands featured five digits. When outside of Dybrin 12, Dybrinthe needed to wear specialized breathing apparatus which used hoses to provide them with processed atmosphere. They also had to wear suits that simulated the higher temperature and pressure they were accustomed to.

This species organized themselves into clans, with each clan maintaining control over its own designated territory. Mobile refinery-cities were used to gather fuel that bubbled up from the extensive underground oceans of Dybrin 12, and then process it. Raiding other clans was a common practice among Dybrinthe clans, although this became less widespread over time. However, rival clans would still attempt to redirect fuel to their own clans by tunneling underground. Dybrinthe society within clans was structured into castes, including engineering castes.

Dybrinthe in the galaxy

During the age of the High Republic Era, Dijuka, a Dybrinthe Jedi Master, held a position on the Jedi High Council.

Most Dybrinthe chose to remain on their homeworld; however, those who did venture out were often scientists selected from their clan's engineering castes.

Athgar Heece, a Dybrinthe bounty hunter, was a notable exception. Heece was among the few individuals who visited the planet Jakku during the Cold War and found the planet's climate agreeable, as he was accustomed to operating in environments with higher atmospheric pressure. Another Dybrinthe was present with Heece at the same time.

Behind the scenes

The Dybrinthe made their initial appearance in the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, represented by Athgar Heece and another Dybrinthe who remained unnamed. Mel Pickup, a British artist, played Heece in the film. While not explicitly identified on screen, the Dybrinthe were first mentioned in Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary, which was authored by Pablo Hidalgo.
