Plot summary

The Je'daii Council dispatches Je'daii Rangers Hawk Ryo and Lanoree Brock with the task of mediating a dispute between Dessain Mining and its workforce. The workers are seeking representation to ensure their concerns are addressed in the company's management. Both parties have agreed that the most effective solution involves a planned union between Oma Dessain, the daughter of the company's owner, and Brom Santis, the eldest son of the workers' leader.

However, Oma has been abducted by the forces of Baron Volnos Ryo, Dessain's competitor. This kidnapping has amplified the already present tensions between the negotiating factions, each suspecting the other of involvement. Meanwhile, the kidnapped girl is being held in an abandoned structure located in Kainnan, a city under evacuation orders due to an impending volcanic eruption. While Ranger Brock attempts to maintain the course of negotiations, Ranger Ryo sets out to locate Oma, and then capitalizes on the volcanic eruption as a distraction to successfully rescue her.

Simultaneously, within the negotiation chambers, Betolo, a servant of the Dessain family secretly in the employ of the Shikaakwa crime syndicate, attempts to poison Ranger Brock in hopes of instigating open warfare between the concerned parties. However, Lanoree Brock detects an anomaly with her beverage and exposes the traitor in their midst.

Following Oma's safe return, she declines to proceed with the marriage to young Santis. As Brock overhears the disagreement between the father and daughter, she proposes an alternative solution: the young individuals become foster children, each spending six months with the opposing household. The two families reluctantly accept the Je'daii's suggestion, and after finalizing the arrangements, the Rangers depart from Zerist. Lanoree Brock then receives a message from the Council, summoning her back to Tython for a special assignment, while Hawk Ryo makes his way towards Furies Gate.
