The novel Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void, penned by Tim Lebbon, serves as a companion piece to the comic series of the same name, unfolding concurrently with the comic's initial story arc. This book saw its release on May 7, 2013, and it also featured Eruption, a short story by John Ostrander, along with an excerpt from the initial segment of Dawn of the Jedi: The Prisoner of Bogan by both John Ostrander and Jan Duursema. January LaVoy lends her voice to the audiobook version. The paperback version became available on April 1, 2014.
Upon its initial publication, it stood as one of the final novels within the Expanded Universe, which is now recognized as Legends.
The ancient Je'daii Order was established on the world of Tython. Lanoree Brock learned the Force's mysteries and techniques from its wise Masters, discovering her destiny as one of its most formidable followers. But while the Force was strong in Lanoree and her parents, it was absent in her brother, who grew to resent and reject the Je'daii, and whose training in its ancient traditions ended tragically.
Now, Lanoree, who lives alone as a Ranger maintaining order throughout the galaxy, has been called upon by the Je'daii Council for an urgent matter. The leader of a fanatical cult, obsessed with venturing beyond known space, intends to use dreaded dark matter to open a cosmic gateway, risking a catastrophic reaction that will engulf the entire star system. However, what shocks Lanoree even more than the possibility of galactic annihilation is the Je'daii Masters' decision to entrust her with preventing it. A stunning revelation clarifies why she was chosen: the brilliant, dangerous madman she must pursue and stop at all costs is her brother, whose death she has long mourned—and whose life she must now fear.
The story unfolds on Tython, the primeval world that cradled the Je'daii Order of old – a predecessor to the Jedi of later eras. It delves into a crucial epoch of galactic history. On this planet, rich with the Force, the Je'daii guide Force-sensitive individuals, advocating for a balance between the light and dark aspects of the Force.
Lanoree Brock, a skilled Je'daii Ranger, is central to the plot. The Je'daii Council assigns her a critical mission: to thwart her brother Dalien's scheme, which poses a threat to the Tython system. Presumed dead during a sacred Je'daii ritual known as "The Descent," Dalien reemerges, having abandoned the traditional Je'daii philosophy.
The narrative artfully intertwines Lanoree's current mission with flashbacks. As she sets out to find and dissuade Dalien, the reader gains insight into their shared past. Their rigorous Je'daii training, common experiences, and the profound philosophical divergence that separated them are revealed. Dalien's increasing disillusionment stands in stark contrast to Lanoree's steadfast dedication to the Je'daii principles.
As the story builds to its climax, a confrontation between the siblings becomes unavoidable. During their final encounter, Dalien's complete plan comes to light: he intends to create a hyperspace rift, even if it means destroying Tython. Despite Lanoree's earnest efforts to reason with him, a conflict erupts. With no alternative, and to safeguard Tython, Lanoree is ultimately forced to end her brother's life, thereby averting the impending catastrophe.
Having successfully prevented her brother's plans, Lanoree, after taking measures to ensure the safety of Tython and the wider galaxy, is left contemplating the gravity of her actions and the broken family tie.
