Funeral Theme

Funeral Theme is a recurring musical theme within the Star Wars saga, crafted by the composer John Williams, and it can be heard in the soundtracks of all three trilogies.

The first instance of this theme occurs shortly following Yoda's transformation into the Cosmic Force upon death in Return of the Jedi, which was released in 1983. The theme is expanded with a choir during the Funeral of Qui-Gon Jinn in the 1999 movie The Phantom Menace. It is further developed in Revenge of the Sith during the demise of Padmé Amidala, the wife of Anakin Skywalker and mother of twins Luke and Leia, as well as Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader in his suit. The 2005 film then uses it throughout its ending sequence, without a choir, during Padmé Amidala's funeral and when Vader and Darth Sidious observe the beginning stages of the Death Star's construction. A version of this funeral leitmotif also appears in "The Final Saber Duel", a track from the 2019 film The Rise of Skywalker, representing Leia Skywalker Organa Solo's sacrifice. However, the motif was removed from the movie's final version.

In Episode I, the score also featured a pair of ominous chimes around the time Mace Windu questions whether Darth Maul is the Sith Master or the apprentice, which served as a hint that Palpatine was the other Sith Lord.
