Garth Breise

Garth Breise, an astronomer of the male Human variety, was employed by the Extragalactic Society, a scientific organization. Stationed at the ExGal-4 exploratory base located on the world of Belkadan in the Outer Rim, he worked the night shift at the facility's sensor station around 25 ABY. In addition to his astronomical duties, Breise also served as an engineer at the base, frequently undertaking technical tasks, including the construction of specialized equipment.

Breise was a popular figure at ExGal-4, known for his regular conversations and games of dejarik (a type of board game) with his fellow crew members. He also collaborated with Yomin Carr, a Yuuzhan Vong advance agent operating incognito at ExGal-4 to prevent transmissions that might alert the galaxy to the imminent threat posed by the Yuuzhan Vong. During an inspection of the base's communications tower, which Carr had sabotaged, Breise met his death at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong agent, effectively cutting off the base's connection to the outside world by eliminating its engineer.

ExGal-4 on Belkadan, where Garth Breise worked

Breise, a male Human astronomer, was an employee of the Extragalactic Society, and was stationed at the ExGal-4 listening post on the planet Belkadan, which was located in the Outer Rim Territories during the time of the New Republic. Sometime between 22 ABY and 25 ABY, he joined the team tasked with monitoring the edges of the galaxy for indications of extra-galactic life, and worked the night shift at the base. Initially, he was overjoyed to be assigned to ExGal-4 and the prospect of contributing to any extra-galactic discoveries, a sentiment that the team generally dismissed as "newbie" enthusiasm. However, he eventually found the assignment monotonous, predicting that any new recruits would eventually become disillusioned. His main duty was manning his sensor station while observing and monitoring areas of space for a scientific anomaly or discovery that would benefit the galaxy; he also possessed engineering skills.

A dark discovery

In 25 ABY, Danni Quee, an ExGal member, detected an unusual object entering the Helska system; Breise calculated that its trajectory would cause it to impact the fourth planet of the system's. Amid a heated debate among the team regarding how to handle this information, Yomin Carr, a new recruit, suggested that a detachment investigate and report their findings to ExGal proper. Breise, who was intoxicated with ryll, quickly praised Carr for resolving the argument, unaware that his colleague's Human appearance was merely a disguise. Carr was secretly an advance agent for the Praetorite Vong, a vanguard force for the Yuuzhan Vong from the extra-galactic galaxy, and was aware of the significance of that point in space.

A team including Breise's close friend Bensin Tomri was dispatched to investigate the anomaly. However, the base was unable to contact any outside agency due to damage to ExGal-4's communications tower, which Carr had secretly sabotaged to protect preparations for his people's impending invasion. Breise remained behind to repair the fault, a task he felt compelled to undertake despite his dislike for it, as he wished to avoid being reprimanded by his colleague Quee.

When Breise and Carr ascended the damaged communications tower to repair it, Breise noticed several small red beetles on the ground around the tower. He was unaware that these were Yuuzhan Vong-developed creatures known as dweebits that Carr had introduced into Belkadan's ecology to facilitate his people's future terraforming efforts there. Barely noticing the gas being emitted by the dweebits and reluctant to attribute any of the tower's damage to the beetles as Carr suggested, Breise decided to address any issues at the top of the tower first, leading the way up the structure.

The last task

Yomin Carr, Garth Breise's killer

Knowing that any transmissions resulting from a successful repair of the tower would likely draw attention to the incursion of the Praetorite Vong, Carr prepared to ambush Breise at the top of the tower. While Breise was momentarily distracted by the departure of the base's Spacecaster shuttle, which was carrying the outbound team members, Carr struck Breise's windpipe. As Breise raised one hand to his throat, Carr struck the wrist of the hand that was holding on to the tower before severing Breise's climbing rope with a coufee blade. Despite his attempts to regain his balance, Breise fell a hundred meters to his death, striking the side of the tower and ultimately landing on the ground. Carr briefly expressed regret—not for Breise's killing, but for the possibility that his falling body had crushed several dweebits on the ground.

Following Breise's death, the other members of the ExGal-4 team present were deeply saddened. Tomri never learned of Breise's fate, as he perished on Helska IV. Tee-ubo Doole, another team member, dreaded having to inform Tomri of Breise's death, but she remained unaware of Tomri's fate before succumbing to the gas released by Carr's dweebits, which had reached toxic levels.

Personality and traits

Breise was an involved member of ExGal-4, both professionally and socially. Despite his apathy towards his job, he was competent and diligent. He was also a skilled conversationalist, and discussions about new base members were among his favorite topics. Furthermore, he praised intelligent observations and discoveries made by his colleagues. Breise also enjoyed playing the board game dejarik with other team members, such as Tomri, Doole, and Quee, and engaged in the recreational use of ryll spice with Tomri.

While Breise's duties primarily involved astronomy, which he eventually found dull and predicted that new member Carr would also find dull, his engineering skills meant that repair jobs were assigned to him, such as building a connector to sort cables after the ExGal-4 communications tower was damaged. Despite his aversion to certain responsibilities at ExGal-4, he undertook them with skill, as refusal would result in a scolding from Quee. Nevertheless, Breise did not hesitate to express sullenness and sarcasm if he felt imposed upon. While preparing to repair the base's communications tower, Breise prioritized safety, acting on concerns raised by Carr and using ExGal-4's floodlights to check for potential dangers near the tower—specifically, Belkadan's redcrested cougars.

Equipment

As an engineer, Breise had access to the tools required to build a connector for sorting cables for ExGal-4's communications tower, and he carried a blaster on his belt when personally investigating the outage at the construct with Carr.

Behind the scenes

Breise was first introduced in Vector Prime, the 1999 novel that launched the Star Wars: The New Jedi Order series, written by R. A. Salvatore.
