Nantex-class territorial defense starfighter

The Nantex-class territorial defense starfighter, alternatively known as the Geonosian starfighter or the beak-wing fighter, represented a starfighter model. Huppla Pasa Tisc Shipwrights Collective manufactured it specifically for the Geonosians to defend Geonosis from invaders. During the Clone Wars, these compact, fast vehicles served with the Confederacy of Independent Systems' army and navy in a limited number of significant engagements. These included Sev'rance Tann's campaigns, the Battle of Muunilinst, and the First Battle of Geonosis itself, which marked the beginning of the galactic conflict.

Characteristics

Design and construction

The Nantex-class starfighter was a streamlined fighter with a pointed nose, notable for its exceptional speed and agility. It was purpose-built for pilots of the Geonosian species, specifically those from their specialized pilot caste. Huppla Pasa Tisc Shipwrights Collective engineered and constructed it, using thin strands of pliable laminasteel for the frame, a material also utilized in Geonosian hives, similar to other Geonosian starships. The construction process involved heating and wrapping this material around the assembled internal components. Upon hardening, the laminasteel created a robust, flexible, and aerodynamic frame capable of withstanding significant impacts. Following frame completion, engineers attached magnetic hardpoints for the primary engines and weapon. These modular mounts facilitated the addition of various components for specialized missions, including advanced sensor packages, booster rockets, and other enhancements. The primary engine orb was housed in a rotary socket with an ignition chamber at its center. High-energy propellant particles were directed into this chamber through a bottle field, which only allowed the highest velocity particles to pass, contributing to the ship's remarkable speed.

Avionics

The Nantex-class fighter incorporated a sophisticated set of multi-axis control yokes, demanding considerable manual dexterity from a Geonosian to operate effectively. Furthermore, crucial performance data and system information were communicated to the pilot via a scent-stimulator mask, leveraging the Geonosians' keen sense of smell. This mask also enabled remote piloting of the craft. These design characteristics rendered the craft virtually impossible for other species to fly, let alone utilize in combat scenarios. A lone Geonosian pilot occupied a compact cockpit, with their head extending into a transparent bubble canopy offering an unobstructed 360-degree view.

These pilots, nurtured within their caste's expansive hives, were trained to attack enemy forces with apparent recklessness. From birth, each pilot was integrated with the systems of a specific beak-wing, fostering a lasting, counterpart-level bond. This resulted in significantly improved reaction times during combat.

Offensive and defensive systems

The fighter's primary armament consisted of a turret-mounted laser cannon, nestled between its forward, needle-like mandibles and secured within a magnetic bracket. This turret fired amethyst laser bolts, and its modular design allowed for the substitution of other weapons, such as an ion cannon, based on situational needs.

In addition to its modular weapon assembly, the Nantex-class fighter was equipped with one hundred small, independently-aimed tractor beam and repulsorlift generators. These systems enhanced the starfighter's maneuverability within an atmosphere, restricted enemy craft mobility, and enabled the guidance and off-axis firing of laser bolts from the main weapon. The Nantex-class ship was considered a "stealth" vehicle due to its low ambient glow from engine and weapon systems, making it difficult for sensors to detect. This was strategically employed by the Geonosians to defend their territory: When intruders threatened their homeworld, swarms of these craft would emerge from the Geonosian asteroid field, ambushing unsuspecting attackers.

History

Pre–Clone Wars roles

Before the Clone Wars began, the Geonosians primarily used the beak-wing starfighter to protect against unwanted visitors. Geonosis was encircled by an asteroid ring. While relatively stable, it was composed of numerous rocks, ranging from small pebbles to large bulk freighters, providing excellent ambush positions. The Nantex-class fighters, with their inherent maneuverability and the expertise of their bonded pilots, could navigate this field more effectively than other vessels.

Battles during the Clone Wars

Nantex-class fighters fought in the First Battle of Geonosis.

During the initial phases of the First Battle of Geonosis, numerous Nantex-class fighters were deployed. Some of these craft, along with Vulture droid starfighters, were dispatched to intercept the Acclamator-class assault ship Aken, which was transporting thousands of clone troopers alongside Jedi Master Yoda's mission. Their goal was to rescue the Jedi who were battling in the Petranaki arena after attempting to save Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Padmé Amidala. As the battle concluded, a pair of these fighters shielded Count Dooku from the pursuing LAAT/i carrying Obi-Wan and Anakin, as he escaped to his personal hangar before the impending Confederacy defeat. Sun Fac, a Geonosian lieutenant targeted for assassination by Delta Squad, attempted to flee his homeworld aboard a Nantex fighter, but clone commandos shot him down before he could escape.

Many Nantex-class fighters were part of the Confederacy forces involved in General Sev'rance Tann's campaign against the Galactic Republic. Count Dooku dispatched her to disrupt a secret project and secure its results, the Decimator. On Eredenn Prime, Tatooine, Alaris Prime, Sarapin, [Aereen], and Krant, these fighters provided air support for ground troops and served as a buffer against Republic LAAT/is and Jedi-piloted Delta-7 interceptors. Initially, the campaign was successful for the Confederacy, but under the leadership of Jedi General Echuu Shen-Jon, the clone forces ultimately prevailed, resulting in Tann's death and the destruction of most of her forces.

Although the Geonosians did not sell these fighters to outsiders, they were observed being flown by InterGalactic Banking Clan-controlled OOM pilot battle droids during the Battle of Muunilinst. In this battle, swarms of these fighters, deployed from orbital gun platforms, fought against the clone-piloted V-19 Torrent starfighters used by the Galactic Republic.

During the Second Battle of Geonosis, Nantex-class starfighters were used to defend the primary droid foundry from the attacking Republic forces.

Near the end of the Clone Wars, Nantex-class fighters were part of General Grievous's task force during the General's attack on Belderone. It also provided the basis for the Commerce Guild fleet patrol craft.

By 3 BBY, a Nantex-class fighter had been abandoned on the junkyard planet of Raxus Prime.

Behind the scenes

The Nantex-class starfighter was initially conceived for Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, but it made its debut in the video game Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, set just before and during the film. In the game, these craft were also equipped with warhead launchers in addition to their laser cannons.

Originally, the droid starfighter seen in Episode I was intended to be the Separatists' main air defense, but the decision was made to provide the Geonosians with their own fighter. At one point, the fighter was envisioned with large sails, but this concept was later incorporated into Count Dooku's solar sailer. When the air battle scene was cut, the fighter was instead planned to appear in a shot where a Republic attack gunship strafes a Geonosian airstrip, destroying the waiting craft, but this shot was ultimately removed.

In the video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns, the Nantex is represented as the "Fast Geonosian Fighter," following the "Geonosian Fighter" and preceding the "Advanced Geonosian Fighter" in the Confederacy forces' in-game tech tree.

In Star Wars: Battlefront, the beak-wing can be flown by any in-game character class, likely for gameplay purposes.

While depicted flying upright in Attack of the Clones and Jedi Starfighter, the Clone Wars series portrays them as constantly spinning during flight, rather than flying straight.
