Gloomroot was a specific variety of tuber that was cultivated within the Shadowlands, which are the deepest parts of the forests located on the planet known as Kashyyyk. This vegetable lent its name to Gloomroot Hollow, a section of Kashyyyk's forest floor. The Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs utilized shredded gloomroot as an ingredient in Gloomroot Pancake, a brown hued vegetarian accompaniment; he provided a recipe for this dish in The Life Day Cookbook, his second cookbook, which saw publication sometime after 34 ABY, following the release of his initial cookbook.
The initial mention of gloomroot occurred in the 2021 publication Star Wars: The Life Day Cookbook, a culinary book authored by both Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak. The out-of-universe recipe provided for Gloomroot Pancakes substitutes peeled russet potatoes for the fictional gloomroot.
