The Greater Tion encompassed the region surrounding the Tion Cluster within the Outer Rim Territories, demonstrating the influence of the Tionese. This designation of the past came into use after Xim the Despot brought unity to the area around 25,000 BBY, and it persisted for the subsequent thousand years, until this isolated part of the galaxy became part of the Old Republic.

Following the Galactic Republic's annexation of the region in 23,900 BBY, the Greater Tion was subsequently broken up into a number of sectors. By the time of the Clone Wars, the Tion Cluster was eventually structured into the Tion Hegemony and the Kingdom of Cron, becoming a center for Separatism. In response, the Galactic Empire divided the Hegemony into the Allied Tion sector and the Tion Hegemony, while renaming the Kingdom of Cron to the Cronese Mandate. The Cronese generally had a broader outlook compared to the rest of the Cluster, and the Allied Tion, while lacking a deep history, became well-known for its manufacturing and commerce. The remaining portion of the Tion Hegemony, however, was split into two quite distinct regions: the moderately prosperous Livien Worlds at the beginning of the Desevran Trace near the Perlemian Trade Route, and the impoverished, culturally distinct worlds beyond the Indrexu Spiral along the Tion Trade Route, which were known as the Back Spiral.
The Empire also reorganized the areas surrounding the Cluster, forming the Indrexu sector from territory that had been part of the Hegemony beyond Kanaver. The worlds of the Far Perlemian were of little interest to the Republic during its later years, and slavers, pirates, and Separatists often operated without interference there. The Indrexu sector — a name referencing the Indrexu Confederation, a successor state to Xim's empire many millennia prior — was created from the Hegemony in an attempt to prevent the restless Indrexu worlds from joining forces with their Livien neighbors.
Another effort by the Empire to establish a buffer zone was the Keldrath sector, in this case between the Pakuuni sector and the Tion. This undertaking was poorly planned and had the opposite effect — that part of the Tion Hegemony had always been drawn to Pakuuni, and the new sector quickly fell under its influence.
During Xim's Expansionist Period, the Thanium Worlds were conquered by the Tionese and served as the industrial heart of his empire, which once extended to the edges of the Radama Void and included worlds that would later be associated with the Sith Empire and the Gordian Reach. In Xim's era, the northern, rimward parts of the Thanium Worlds were called the Far Indrexu. Despite the name, the passage of many years meant that the Thanium Worlds were very different from what they had been during Xim's reign.
