Gunthar, a Yvarema of the royal explorer caste, met misfortune early in life. On his initial voyage, slavers seized him, and he was subsequently sold to Moff Kentor Sarne residing on Kal'Shebbol. He was compelled to participate in gladiatorial combat, but the New Republic eventually liberated him, leading to his enlistment on the FarStar.
On the planet Yvara, the Majjvara cultivated Gunthar to serve as a royal explorer. His designated role involved venturing beyond the Kathol Rift and communicating his discoveries back to the Majjvara, enriching the Yvarema's understanding of the wider galaxy. He embarked from Yvara aboard a scout vessel, accompanied by a lore gatherer, three workers, and a pair of explorer-scouts to sustain a functional hive-mind connection. During their inaugural journey, slavers ambushed and captured their ship. Gunthar's crew perished, and his cognitive abilities declined due to the severance from the hive-mind. He underwent a regression, exhibiting childlike behavior.
Moff Sarne purchased Gunthar and confined him within the detention cells of his palace situated on Kal'Shebbol. Given his imposing size and considerable physical strength, he was coerced into participating in gladiatorial contests for the Moff's entertainment. He forged a bond with Qesya Vth'naar, a Sludir gladiator, who assumed a protective role over the seemingly immature alien. His liberation occurred when New Republic forces successfully freed the planet.
Gunthar enisted with the crew of the FarStar with the intent of returning home. Despite his diminished mental capacity, he possessed a compelling desire to reunite with his people and the Majjvara, even if he was not fully conscious of it. He understood that the FarStar was heading in the direction he wanted to go, and it offered the best opportunity for him to get back home. Given his limited intelligence and strength, Gunthar was essentially hired muscle, and he spent a significant portion of his time on the FarStar handling heavy equipment. He was also a proficient fighter, and when paired with Vth'naar, they formed a formidable fighting team.
After several weeks of traversing the Kathol Sector in pursuit of Moff Sarne, the FarStar eventually arrived at Yvara. As Gunthar neared his homeworld, he started to recover much of his intelligence and communication skills. His seemingly new found cognitive and linguistic abilities shocked the crew of the FarStar who were used to him as a simple, but likeable, individual.
Gunthar, along with some of the crew of the FarStar, journeyed to the Yvarema Hive, where he reported to the Majjvara by sharing his experiences with her through the hive-mind. Following this exchange, the Majjvara allied herself with the New Republic as a result of Gunthar's interactions with them.
Now that he was home, Gunthar had no desire to continue his journey with the FarStar. Qesya Vth'naar, now a mother, chose to stay with him. Due to his experiences, and following a skirmish with the Qektoth Confederation in orbit of Yvara, Gunthar suggested the establishment of a new warrior class of Yvarema. The Majjvara concurred, and created a new class known as the FarStar warriors.
Subsequent to the departure of the FarStar, Gunthar and the Yvarema initiated efforts to develop a basic planetary defense force. After observing several vessels entering their system for navigation checks before heading in the direction that the FarStar took, the Yvarema became concerned. They dispatched their newly created forces, under the command of Gunthar and Qesya Vth'naar, to assist the FarStar. Gunthar led his forces into combat in the Battle of Kathol System, assisting the FarStar and their Bothan allies.
Gunthar, as a royal explorer, was selectively bred to possess a more pronounced individual character and a limited cognitive buffer. This design ensured that, even when separated from the hive-mind, he would retain certain aspects of his former identity. Being one of only twelve royal explorers, he held a position of nobility on his planet. His speech was refined, and he often quoted ancient texts. Like all Yarema, he was deeply loyal to the Majjvara.
When separated from his people's hive-mind, Gunthar experienced a significant decline in his intellectual capabilities. During his time away from Yvara, he was not particularly intelligent, although he retained his moral compass and could distinguish between "good" and "bad." He could often discern people's attitudes and react to them, even if it wasn't apparent in the person's actions.
Gunthar's proficiency in Basic was limited, but he could comprehend the language and follow instructions. He spoke a little Basic, but they were usually one-syllable words.
His primary objective was to return home and report to the Majjvara. As he approached Yvara, he progressively regained his intellect and faculties, until he was close enough to rejoin the hive-mind.
