Carbonite sickness, also referred to as carbon sickness or hibernation sickness, represented a potential medical issue. This condition could arise when an individual was revived from a state of suspended animation within carbonite. Tragically, it was known to result in fatalities. Survivors frequently endured symptoms such as extreme fatigue, enfeeblement, lack of fluids, unsteadiness, amnesia, and transient loss of sight. In cases where thawing occurred soon after the freezing process, individuals typically experienced minimal adverse consequences.
Prior to the advent of Hyperdrive technology, spacefarers relied on carbon freezing as a means of suspended animation for extended voyages. A frequent consequence of thawing was Hibernation Sickness, with Death being a prevalent outcome.
During the Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker employed carbonite freezing as a tactic to penetrate Separatist defenses. When Obi-Wan realized Ahsoka had also been frozen, he initially suspected she was a figment of his imagination, referencing the condition. However, Anakin clarified that she had secretly boarded against his wishes. Andris had the potential to alleviate hibernation sickness. Han Solo experienced a relatively mild instance of hibernation sickness following his rescue from carbonite by Leia Organa within Jabba the Hutt's palace. A Mythrol reported lingering visual impairment in his left eye, a consequence of his prior carbonite freezing.
