Icehead

The Iceheads were a species of sentient humanoids characterized by their slender, black physiques and distinctive, spiked, rectangular heads resembling blocks of ice. These beings possessed large mouths filled with sharp, jagged teeth, and their hands were equipped with three fingers ending in sharp claws. While capable of walking upright like other humanoids, they could achieve greater speeds by flipping onto their heads and gliding across icy surfaces.

A community of Iceheads resided on the Forest Moon of Endor. There, armed with unique clubs, they served as guards of the Snow Palace and undertook missions for a sorcerer known as the Snow King and his mistress, Odra. In the year 3 ABY, acting on their masters' commands, they pilfered the season scepter, a powerful artifact, from the Sun King, thereby plunging Endor into a state of perpetual winter. However, a band of resourceful Ewoks, cleverly disguised as Iceheads, infiltrated the palace, retrieved the artifact, and successfully restored the scepter and the natural seasons.

Biology and appearance

Iceheads belonged to a species of cold-adapted, sentient bipedals. Their humanoid bodies were black in color, featuring two arms that terminated in three-clawed hands, and two legs that broadened towards pointed feet.

Iceheads could travel quickly on slick surfaces by skating on their heads.

The head of an Icehead resembled a block of ice. The head had a white coloration and a slender rectangular prism shape, being wide at the front and back, yet narrow on the sides. The eyes of the Iceheads were polygonal and blue, extending across the face from one side to the other. The angles of their eyes could shift, displaying emotions by appearing as quadrilaterals or triangles. The rest of the head consisted of a sizable, shovel-shaped mouth with sharp, uneven edges. The lower jaw protruded and overlapped the upper lip. The mouth was also expressive and capable of conveying emotion. A line bisected the face, leading to the top of the head, which tapered into several rearward-curving spikes. With the exception of the eyes, the entire head was white and glossy, including the inside of the mouth.

Iceheads possessed several adaptations suited for cold environments. They could function without issue in freezing temperatures and navigate even deep snow without sinking. However, their fastest method of travel involved their hard, ice-like heads: on slick surfaces like ice, they could flip over and skate using their heads. Upon reaching their destination, they would revert to an upright walking position.

Society and culture

A number of Iceheads dwelled on the Forest Moon of Endor, where they served a sorcerer leader, the Snow King, and his mistress, a Frost Sprite known as Odra, the Duchess of Sleet. The Iceheads lived and operated within and around the Snow Palace, where their duties included guarding the Snow King and the Duchess of Sleet, with three stationed on each side of their thrones, and patrolling the palace grounds in single file, chanting "Snowy-O, snow-O!" These Icehead guards carried wooden clubs featuring thin, round grips that curved and widened into a flat shape at the other end. Other Iceheads performed various tasks, typically relying on their natural claws and teeth. The Iceheads of Endor understood the language of their superiors, though they rarely spoke themselves, except to acknowledge orders.

History

A group of Iceheads stole the season scepter from the Sun King and plunged Endor into eternal winter.

By 3 ABY, several Iceheads found themselves under the command of the Snow King and his mistress, the Duchess of Sleet, on the Forest Moon of Endor. As Odra's influence over the Snow King grew, she persuaded him to steal the powerful artifact known as the season scepter from his brother, the Sun King. Four Iceheads were assigned to this mission. They ambushed the Sun King while he rested with his friends and snatched the season scepter from the nearby sand. Immediately, the Forest Moon's weather shifted from summer-like warmth to wintery snows. The Icehead squad then skated away on their heads before the Sun King or his companions could stop them.

Shortly thereafter, Odra prompted the Snow King to dispatch a group of Iceheads to intercept four EwoksKneesaa a Jari Kintaka, Latara, Teebo, and Wicket Warrick—who she believed were traveling from Bright Tree Village with a potent item called the Sunstar. The Iceheads were ordered to capture the Ewoks and bring them to the Snow Palace. The Iceheads ambushed the Ewoks, who were traveling on a large, flying leaf. During the ensuing skirmish, the Iceheads boarded the leaf and flew with the Ewoks through a dark tunnel. On the other side, they discovered they were sharing the ride with a large snow monster. Nevertheless, two of the Snow King's minions managed to capture Kneesaa, and using the advantage of higher ground, the Iceheads triggered an avalanche to dislodge the other three Ewoks. With their white-furred prize in tow, the Iceheads returned to the Snow Palace and presented their prisoner in the throne room. Protected by their Icehead guards, the rulers demanded that Kneesaa surrender the Sunstar, but she refused.

The Snow King presented an Icehead club to Wicket W. Warrick for his Belt of Honor.

Meanwhile, a group of club-wielding Iceheads was patrolling the grounds when the three Ewoks from the previous encounter covered themselves in snow and secretly joined the procession as it entered the palace. Back in the throne room, three strange figures appeared, claiming to be ice-on-a-stick vendors. The Snow King and Odra, seemingly seeing through the disguise, ordered their Icehead guards to attack. The servants dutifully flipped onto their heads and slid toward the Ewok Teebo, but he used one of their own clubs to knock them away. In the ensuing fray, Teebo gained possession of the season scepter and began a futile effort to use it. Wicket W. Warrick joined his companion, and together, the two struck the Snow King with a magical blast that broke the thrall of the Duchess of Sleet and restored his appearance and personality to normal. Another blast shrank the Frost Sprite and melted her into a puddle of water.

In the battle's aftermath, the wintery weather subsided. Several other Ewoks, Logray and Chief Chirpa, arrived at the palace in the company of the Sun King. The Snow King handed over the stolen scepter, and Endor returned to summer. In appreciation for his help, the Snow King gave Wicket W. Warrick an Icehead club for his Belt of Honor.

Behind the scenes

The Iceheads are featured in "The Season Scepter," an episode of the Ewoks animated series, which originally aired during the show's second season in 1986. Production animation cells reveal that the characters were referred to as "Iceheads" throughout the production process. The Iceheads were animated using a technique of two cells per pose: one for their eyes, and one for the rest of their bodies.
