IN-GA 44

IN-GA 44, also known as Inga, was a Human replica droid of feminine design, brought into existence by Sluissi scientist Alessi Quon for the Imperial Intelligence division of Experi-Tech. Her design was rooted in the work of renowned droidmaker Massad Thrumble, and she notably lacked the synthskin covering typically found on HRDs. This droid was equipped with concealed blasters within her forearms, along with calf-mounted jets that granted her the power of flight. She served alongside Imperial Intelligence agent Jahan Cross during various missions. IN-GA 44 joined Cross on his journey to the Corporate Sector as he investigated the Iron Eclipse initiative. While there, Iaclyn Stark, leader of Rossum Droidworks, captured IN-GA 44 and infected her with the Iron Eclipse computer virus, which was engineered to grant Stark control over any droid, overriding all other programming. IN-GA 44 met her end when the Eclipse space station plummeted into the atmosphere of the gas giant Reltooine.

Biography

Identified as both IN-GA 44 and Inga, this particular Human replica droid (HRD) was programmed with a feminine personality. She was created by Alessi Quon, a scientist of the Sluissi species, for the Imperial Intelligence arm of the Galactic Empire. Quon's design drew inspiration from droids crafted by the celebrated droidmaker Massad Thrumble. IN-GA 44 functioned as a companion and aide to Jahan Cross, an agent within Imperial Intelligence. Cross opted against the typical skin and hair coverings for HRDs, preferring IN-GA 44 to maintain a distinctly droid appearance rather than resembling a Human.

Mission on Wayland

IN-GA 44 deploying her blasters

In the year 3 BBY, IN-GA 44 accompanied Jahan Cross to the planet Wayland. Cross was there to investigate Colonel Milosh Muhrlein, who oversaw Imperial Research Station 61, a highly classified research facility. She examined the colonel's records and verified that the experimental droids and devices produced at the station were identical to those circulating on the black market. When Muhrlein's attempt to bribe Cross failed, IN-GA 44, acting on Cross's command, shifted into combat mode and eliminated Muhrlein's two prototype battle droids, designated B-2A and B-2B.

Following their departure from Wayland, IN-GA 44 went with Cross to Coruscant, the galactic capital. During Cross's debriefing with Armand Isard, the Director of Imperial Intelligence, she was in the Experi-Tech office, undergoing evaluation by her creator, Alessi Quon. After Isard's debriefing, Cross retrieved her, overriding Quon's objections about unfinished evaluations, and took IN-GA 44 with him on a mission to the planet Etti IV.

Corporate Sector

Upon their arrival at Mondder Spaceport on Etti IV within the Corporate Sector, aboard Imperial Shuttle 9604, IN-GA 44 remained with Jahan's belongings, guarding them against inspection. Later, she accompanied Cross to a gathering at the Imperial Embassy, where she identified and provided commentary on VIPs for Cross. She furnished him with details about Elli Stark, daughter of the smuggler and pirate Iaco Stark; Dah'lis Stark, Iaco Stark's second wife; Emesh Nar, Blains Vorlin's ambassador aide, and Iaclyn Stark, Iaco Stark's son. Cross subsequently directed her back to his room to conduct research and uncover connections between Emesh Nar and the Stark family. IN-GA 44 discovered that Nar and Iaclyn Stark were childhood friends and that the Stark family had leveraged its influence to secure Nar's position as aide to Ambassador Vorlin. Later that evening, Cross contacted the droid. While she was updating Cross on the link between Nar and the Starks, Emesh Nar and Iaclyn Stark ambushed her, incapacitating her with an ion blast. Subsequently, she was transported to the Eclipse space station, in orbit around the planet Reltooine.

On the Eclipse

IN-GA 44's final words

While aboard the Eclipse, Iaclyn Stark reprogrammed IN-GA 44 with the Iron Eclipse virus. This computer virus enabled the Starks to command any droid, with the intention of using it to seize control of the galaxy. Cross and Elli Stark enlisted the services of Han Solo, a smuggler, and his Wookiee co-pilot Chewbacca, aboard their YT-1300 light freighter, the Millennium Falcon, to pilot them to the space station. After Solo dropped them off, they faced an attack and attempted to evade Iaco Stark and his army of droids. IN-GA 44 obstructed the doorway and received orders from the elder Stark to kill them.

IN-GA 44 unleashed fire upon Cross with her blasters, yet she couldn't bring herself to kill him, consistently missing her shots, due to the deeply ingrained directive to protect him within her matrix. Cross then commanded her to kill Stark, but this order also proved impossible due to the Iron Eclipse programming. Cross proposed that by disabling the repulsorlift generators that maintained the space station's orbit, she could satisfy both directives. IN-GA 44 recognized the logic in this plan and proceeded to the lower levels of the space station. Iaco Stark commanded his droids to intercept her before she could complete her sabotage. She breached the lift shafts and descended to the repulsorlift generators, which she destroyed with her blasters. The resulting shockwave neutralized her weapons and jets, allowing the pursuing droids to catch up. She eliminated numerous droids in fierce hand-to-hand combat. IN-GA 44 then made her way to an exterior door, where she contacted Cross via comlink. She conveyed her inability to fly and thus escape the doomed station. IN-GA 44 was obliterated along with the rest of Eclipse, as it succumbed to Reltooine's gravity and plunged into the planet's atmosphere.

Having been rescued earlier by Solo and Chewbacca, Cross decided against returning to the station, believing that he shouldn't endanger the Millennium Falcon in an attempt to save his droid. Cross also suspected that IN-GA 44 might still be infected with the Iron Eclipse virus and could still attempt to kill him under its influence. Even if she wasn't, she would possess the sole remaining copies of the virus's code, and Cross didn't want that to fall into the Empire's hands, fearing the chaos the virus could unleash.

Characteristics

IN-GA 44 was a bipedal, humanoid droid with a female personality. Her plating was silver and purple. Her smooth face featured two green photoreceptors, but after being infected with the Iron Eclipse virus, her right photoreceptor turned red. IN-GA 44 lacked individual toes, but each arm terminated in five fingers. She had cone-shaped audio sensors with a vertical attachment, and she notably lacked the skin and hair overlay typically applied to HRDs, a deliberate choice by Jahan Cross, who preferred droids to "look like droids."

IN-GA 44 was a formidable combatant, capable of defeating multiple droid opponents simultaneously. She possessed hidden blasters in her forearms and calf-mounted leg jets that enabled her to fly. She was a class four droid specifically designed for combat operations.

Behind the scenes

IN-GA 44 was conceived by John Ostrander for the Star Wars: Agent of the Empire—Iron Eclipse story arc, which was published by Dark Horse Comics from December 2011 to April 2012.
