J. Ras-Teker served as an admiral within the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB). This agency of the Galactic Empire was responsible for maintaining the obedience of both civilians and military forces to the government's established ideals. Directly following the Battle of Yavin, Senior Commander Alecia Beck of the ISB reported to Ras-Teker. After two unsuccessful attempts to capture Caluan Ematt, a lieutenant serving the opposing Rebel Alliance, initially on Taanab and subsequently on Cyrkon, Beck sent a message to Admiral Ras-Teker. At the time, Ras-Teker was residing with the ISB Command on Coruscant, the Empire's [capital](/article/capital] planet.
The character of J. Ras-Teker initially appeared in Smuggler's Run, a brief animated comic which re-enacts particular occurrences from Greg Rucka's 2015 novel titled Smuggler's Run: A Han Solo & Chewbacca Adventure presented as an Imperial message from within the universe. In the animated comic, Commander Beck refers to her superior simply as "Admiral." However, in Rucka's initial writing for the comic, the message is directed to "Adm. Ras-Teker, J. - ISB Command, Coruscant."
