As part of the Shrikes recon unit, Lieutenant Caluan Ematt served as a soldier in the Alliance to Restore the Republic during their struggle against the Galactic Empire in the Galactic Civil War.

Scouting for the Alliance

Leading a team of six, Ematt was scouting for potential Rebel Alliance bases. They were on Taanab when Alecia Beck and her Imperial Security Bureau forces ambushed them. After escaping, he sent a transmission burst to the Alliance High Command detailing his plan to hide in Motok on Cyrkon. He snuck aboard a Kuat Yards hauler inside a freight container. Once in Motok, he briefly visited a cantina before leaving without speaking. Ematt hid in a hotel on Motok's outskirts, letting Delia Leighton know he sought off-planet transport.

Leia Organa tasked Han Solo and Chewbacca with meeting and extracting Ematt before his capture and interrogation. Leia knew Ematt possessed crucial data on Rebellion plans, future bases, and supply caches; Imperial extraction could doom the war. The smugglers located Ematt on Cyrkon. After he confirmed the pass-phrase, they entered his room to leave. Environmental alarms then sounded, a signal Solo arranged with a local in case of trouble. Ematt suggested escaping via the stairs, but the alarms locked them.

As Chewbacca worked on the door, bounty hunters emerged from the elevators and attacked Ematt and the smugglers. The Wookiee forced the door, and the trio fled to Solo's rented V-40 landspeeder. They headed for the Millennium Falcon, but Beck and Stormtroopers ambushed them. Ematt boarded the Falcon after Solo and Chewbacca created a distraction with the Miss Fortune. The two ships fled, but the Vehement intercepted them, sending TIE fighters to attack.

Ematt manned the Falcon's quad laser cannons, shooting down several fighters. He input the coordinates for the Rebel fleet rendezvous into the Falcon's navicomputer, but Solo refused to abandon the damaged Miss Fortune. When the Vehement's tractor beam captured the freighter, Ematt vowed he would not be captured alive. Solo assured him of their escape, and they evaded the Star Destroyer by diving towards the planet until the tractor beam lost contact.

Mission to the Graceful Promising

After the Battle of Yavin, Han Solo requested Ematt's help on a scavenging operation to the Graceful Promising, a derelict Vontorian treasure ship. Maz Kanata, the famous pirate queen, had loaded the ship with treasures, and it was now locked in orbit around a dark star. Ematt, accompanied by Alliance Pathfinders, collaborated with Solo and Chewbacca, leading to a successful mission. One valuable find was a significant quantity of Kiirium. Solo decided to let the Alliance keep most of the mission's earnings, despite his debts to Jabba.

Zastiga

Not long after the Battle of Hoth, Ematt joined Nien Nunb on the Remembrance to collect Leia Organa and transport her to a clandestine meeting with the Alliance to Restore the Republic's leadership on Zastiga.

Sullust

Following the Operation Ringbreaker stall in 3 ABY, Ematt journeyed to Sullust to aid the Sullustan Resistance during the Empire's siege on the Alliance's 61st Mobile Infantry, known as Twilight Company, at the Inyusu Tor mineral processing facility.

Battle of Endor

Later, Ematt was part of General Han Solo's Endor strike team, participating in the decisive Battle of Endor.

Joining the Resistance

The Alliance to Restore the Republic eventually defeated the Empire, forming the New Republic, which Ematt joined. After Senator Tai-Lin Garr's assassination in 28 ABY, Ematt attended a secret meeting with other New Republic soldiers, pilots, and officers where Leia announced the Resistance formation. This paramilitary group aimed to protect the New Republic from threats like the First Order.

In the Resistance's early days, Ematt acted as Organa's agent, serving in the New Republic Defense Force while recruiting for the Resistance. After too many New Republic pilots defected, Ematt left his Republic post to fully join the Resistance.

Recruiting Poe Dameron

In 31 ABY, he accompanied Organa to the Mirrin Prime Republic base to witness Commander Poe Dameron's recruitment, fresh from a skirmish with the First Order. Ematt intercepted the young pilot with two shore police and brought him to Organa.

Battle of Crait

After the Battle of Starkiller Base, Ematt was promoted from major to general. During the Battle of Crait, Ematt observed the AT-M6s and AT-ATs advancing toward Crait outpost, positioned near a trench as his troops took their positions.

Personality and traits

Caluan Ematt was a human male, identifiable by his brown hair and eyes.

Behind the scenes

The character of Caluan Ematt made his debut in the simultaneous release of Smuggler's Run: A Han Solo & Chewbacca Adventure and Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure during Force Friday in 2015, where he was simply referred to as "Ematt." Later that September, Nestlé released Smuggler's Run, a comic adaptation of the novel, revealing Ematt's first name as "Caluan." Jordan D. White, a Star Wars comics editor at Marvel who contributed to the video, confirmed the spelling via Twitter. He was brought to life by Andrew Jack in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi.

Ematt appears in concept artwork for the Resistance base featured in Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, although he does not appear in the final film.
