Jezra'lin

Jezra'lin was a non-binary member of the Mon Calamari species, and a part of the Path of the Open Hand missionary order located on the planet of Dalna. This character had an older sibling who possessed Force-sensitive abilities, leading to a lingering desire within Jezra'lin to also exhibit sensitivity to the Force. Within the Path, Jezra'lin belonged to the group known as the Littles, which comprised the younglings under the guidance of the Evereni Marda Ro. When the time arrived for the Kessarine Ferize, along with their partners Er Dal and Fel Ix, to oversee the hatching of their five eggs, the Mon Calamari child sought and obtained permission from Ro to observe the hatching of the offspring, considering them akin to siblings within the Path's extended family. Ro then delegated to Jezra'lin the task of informing the Elders about the commencement of the hatching process. Upon their return, Jezra'lin was presented with one of the newborns by Yana Ro, who is Ro's cousin.

Jezra'lin was characterized by their excitable nature and a tendency to bounce on their toes. In an attempt to keep pace with Marda Ro, they would often hop forward, engaging in lengthy conversations about various topics, a trait that Ro found charming, likening the Mon Calamari to a cheerful little bird.

Behind the scenes

Jezralin was introduced in Path of Deceit.

Jezra'lin made their debut in the young-adult novel The High Republic: Path of Deceit, published in 2022 and co-authored by Justina Ireland and Tessa Gratton as a contribution to Phase II of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project. In response to inquiries regarding the use of singular "they/them" pronouns for Jezra'lin within the novel, Gratton clarified that this choice was intended to signify the character's non-binary gender identity.

The author further elaborated that the character might not explicitly identify as non-binary but could instead align with a gender identity specific to their species, which, when translated into the Galactic Basic language, corresponds to the use of "they/them" pronouns. For the purposes of Wookieepedia, the collaboratively edited, unofficial Star Wars online encyclopedia, Gratton expressed her approval of categorizing Jezra'lin—along with several other characters in Path of Deceit who do not conform to the binary genders of male and female—as non-binary.
