Kar'a'katok, a planet situated within the Core Worlds, served as the original homeworld for the sentient Shimholt species. More than four millennia prior to the Galactic Empire's imperial era, the Shimholt successfully defended against a devastating invasion of Kar'a'katok launched by the Nelori Marauders.
Subsequently, discontent with the planet's governing body resulted in a coup, bringing a group of religiously zealous Shimholt into positions of authority. These Shimholt zealots then focused on strengthening Kar'a'katok's defenses to prevent future invasions, while also enforcing greater isolation for both the species and their world. This isolationist policy endured for four years. Ultimately, Imperial forces conducted a raid on the planet, capturing and subsequently exiling the Shimholt Suprema, Ampotem Za.
Kar'a'katok was a terrestrial planet, often shrouded in mist, and it was located within the Kar'a'katok system found in the Core Worlds.

Sometime prior to 4050 BBY by at least several decades, the Nelori Marauders, a group known for being warriors, outlaws, and pirates, initiated a destructive invasion of Kar'a'katok with the intention of enslaving the Shimholt species that was native to the planet. However, the Shimholt shifted their focus from farming to military defense and successfully repelled the invaders. In the aftermath, many Shimholt became angered by their democratically elected government's failure to prevent the invasion, leading to demands for a change in planetary leadership. A group of Shimholt religious fanatics then launched a coup, overthrowing the government and establishing themselves in power. Following this, an unprecedented effort was undertaken to bolster the planet's defenses against potential invaders. Furthermore, Kar'a'katok was declared off-limits to outsiders, and any Shimholt attempting to leave the planet faced a capital crime. This isolation of the Shimholt homeworld persisted for four thousand years.
After the establishment of the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, they launched a raid on Kar'a'katok. During this operation, Imperial forces under the command of Major Stafuv Rahz apprehended the Shimholt Suprema, Ampotem Za, and removed him from the planet. Za eventually escaped Imperial custody and returned to Kar'a'katok. However, the other Shimholt ostracized and exiled Za for allowing himself to be taken from their homeworld. Consequently, Za surrendered himself to Rahz and eventually began working for the Empire off-world.
Kar'a'katok served as the original world for the reptilian sentient species known as the Shimholt. Once a friendly group of people who practiced agriculture, the Shimholt were profoundly impacted by the invasion of their homeworld by the Nelori Marauders. They developed xenophobic and reclusive tendencies, rarely appearing in the broader galaxy. This resulted in the species being almost forgotten by the time of the Galactic Empire's reign.
Kar'a'katok was initially referenced in "Aliens in the Empire, Part 1: Hierarchy of Power," a Hyperspace article from November 6, 2007 authored by Abel G. Peña and Rich Handley. Handley was specifically responsible for writing the section that mentioned the planet. The reference book The Essential Atlas from 2009 situated the Kar'a'katok system, and thus Kar'a'katok, within grid square K-9.
