The Kuat shipyards, also known as Kuat Drive Yards in reference to the corporation that managed them, were comprised of an enormous space station orbiting the Core planet of Kuat, and were operated by Kuat Drive Yards. Following the establishment of the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, the purpose of these shipyards shifted from constructing civilian vessels to producing Imperial-class Star Destroyers and other vehicles for the Imperial forces. Rebel operatives positioned themselves in the vicinity of the Kuat Shipyards, relaying intelligence to General Airen Cracken regarding their observations. In 5 ABY, the New Republic, which succeeded the Rebel Alliance, launched an assault on the shipyards once more. The conflict concluded with the Empire's capitulation, resulting in the New Republic's seizure of the shipyards.
