The Kupohan were a sentient species originating from the planet Kupoh, situated within the Kupoh system. Their evolutionary path led to the development of specialized frequency filter organs, a response to the intense winds prevalent in their native environment. These organs served to eliminate background noise, enhancing their ability to detect voices, a trait that also aided in their hunting practices. During the Galactic Civil War, they offered assistance to the Rebel Alliance. Consequently, when Luke Skywalker, while engaged in a mission to Rodia, encountered one of their vessels under attack by a pair of TIE/ln space superiority starfighters, he made the decision to jeopardize his assigned mission to provide assistance to the Kupohans, who, with Luke's intervention, successfully escaped into hyperspace.
Possessing two sets of ears and six frequency filters, Kupohans exhibited an auditory range significantly surpassing that of humans and the majority of other species, rendering them exceptionally suited as spies. Their advanced auditory capabilities enabled them to filter out extraneous noise in bustling cantinas and discreetly listen in on specific conversations from across the room. Moreover, their senses of smell and sight were also superior to humans.
Rather than serving as mere adornments, jewelry among the Kupohans functioned as indicators of social standing. Their neck torcs, fashioned from gold, were acquired once per decade. These torcs served as a means of avoiding impolite inquiries regarding age, as the number of rings readily revealed whether an individual was in their twenties, thirties, and so forth.

The Kupohan species was conceived for Kevin Hearne's 2015 novel, Heir to the Jedi. During the writing process, Hearne created a visual representation of his envisioned Kupohan appearance, utilizing the drawing as a reference. Subsequently, he shared the image on his Twitter account.
