The weapon known as a lanvorak made its initial appearance, though without being explicitly named, within the canon Star Wars universe in the fifth edition of the Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle comic book series. Cavan Scott authored the story, while Derek Charm and Chris Fenoglio provided the illustrations. IDW Publishing released this issue on October 31, 2018. The identification of this weapon as a lanvorak first occurred in the 2019 reference publication, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary, penned by Pablo Hidalgo. Within the Star Wars Legends timeline, the Massassi lanvarok debuted in the fourth installment of the Dark Lords of the Sith narrative arc within the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi collection of comics. Tom Veitch and Kevin J. Anderson were the writers, Chris Gossett did the pencils, and the publication date was January 10, 1995.
