The leaf-tail represented a species of winged rodent, characterized as non-sentient, and native to the planet known as Dagobah. These creatures, the leaf-tails, measured approximately thirty centimeters in body length, also exhibiting a wingspan that was roughly equivalent. Notably, they featured a membrane situated at the tip of their tail, which bore a resemblance to the leaf of a gnarltree; this characteristic afforded the rodents camouflage, thereby aiding in predator avoidance, and also gave the leaf-tail its name.
As flying omnivores, leaf-tails primarily consumed berries, yet demonstrated the capacity to subsist on insects and other smaller rodents. While individual leaf-tails presented no danger to sentient beings, the discovery of a leaf-tail nest could incite an attack by dozens of these rodents, employing their teeth in a swarm. During the era of the Galactic Civil War, a select few smugglers, who infrequently journeyed to Dagobah with the intent of capturing jubba birds, propagated tales of leaf-tails inflicting significant damage to starships through the act of chewing through cabling.
Within the current Star Wars canon, leaf-tails received mention in Nexus of Power, a 2016 addition to the Star Wars: Force and Destiny roleplaying game, produced by Fantasy Flight Games. The species first appeared in the Star Wars Legends continuity, initially documented in the 2001 reference work titled The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide, authored by Terryl Whitlatch and Bob Carrau, and featuring illustrations by Whitlatch.
