Long-range turbolaser

The Galactic Alliance engineered long-range turbolaser technology during the time of the Second Galactic Civil War.

Attributes

Compared to standard turbolasers, long-range variants possessed a much greater operational range and delivered considerably more firepower. This permitted vessels utilizing them to attack adversaries from ranges beyond the enemy's retaliatory capabilities. The cost, however, was a significant increase in energy consumption; even when installed on an Imperial II-class Star Destroyer, the power drain was substantial.

Chronology

Initial versions of long-range turbolasers found their way onto several Hapan Battle Dragons and the bow of the vessel Anakin Solo. These weapons were used to bombard Kashyyyk until Luke Skywalker intervened, sabotaging and destroying them. The Confederation managed to acquire long-range turbolaser technology quite early in the conflict. They subsequently deployed this technology on numerous Star Destroyers at the Second Battle of Balmorra, while the Galactic Alliance Fourth Fleet lacked similar armaments. Only the daring strategy employed by Rear Admiral Gavin Darklighter, involving the deployment of his starfighter screen against capital ships while exposing his own fleet to starfighter attacks, prevented the Galactic Alliance from being compelled to retreat. The Super-class Star Destroyer Megador also utilized long-range turbolasers, notably during the Battle of Uroro Station in 41 ABY.
