Growing up in Sacramento, California, Matt Surges pursued higher education at Sacramento State University, where he earned a degree in vocal performance. During his time there, he studied acting under the tutelage of actress Faith Prince. She played a pivotal role in encouraging him to chase his aspirations by relocating to New York City to further his acting studies and aim for a career on Broadway. In 2014, Surges gained admission to the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre's intensive two-year acting conservatory program. Following his graduation in 2016, Surges embarked on his professional journey as an actor and singer.
In 2021, Surges secured the role of voicing the Safari droid SF-R3, the main character in the Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures animated webseries. This series comprised a total of twelve episodes. Surges has stated that "Kowakian Monkey-Lizards" and "Mynocks" were his favorite episodes to contribute to. The initial pair of episodes from the series were launched on StarWarsKids.com and the Star Wars Kids YouTube Channel on October 14, 2021. Subsequently, two new episodes were released each Thursday.
