Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures is a series of animated shorts that premiered on StarWarsKids.com and on the YouTube platform on October 14 of 2021.
The concept for Galaxy of Creatures originated as an idea from Disney's Eastham Studios production team, who proposed a show centered around the various creatures and pets found within the Star Wars universe.
Initially, when the decision was made to feature a droid as the main character, the creative team considered using a pit droid. However, Matt Martin expressed his disapproval of assigning a droid designed for a specific task to a different role. Consequently, the safari droid was developed as an alternative, while retaining certain characteristics reminiscent of a pit droid. Matt Surges, the voice actor for Aree, expressed his excitement about voicing the character.
The inspiration for the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts came from real-world organizations such as the Adventurers' Club of New York and the National Geographic Society. The show's creators believed that the importance of researching and preserving wildlife was equally relevant in the galaxy far, far away as it is on Earth.
The show was officially announced on October 14, 2021, with the simultaneous release of the first two episodes, "Porgs" and "Bantha". Subsequently, two new episodes were released every Thursday until the initial 12-episode season concluded on November 18, 2021. The show was made available on both StarWarsKids.com and YouTube. In 2023, Galaxy of Creatures returned with a new season, featuring new episodes released every Tuesday.
In conjunction with the show's release, Lucasfilm developed online activities and certificates for fans. Additionally, a range of plush toys were introduced as part of the Stitchlings™ line by Mattel, along with t-shirts and other apparel items.
On January 4, 2022, a tie-in World of Reading book titled Galaxy of Creatures was published by Disney–Lucasfilm Press.
Capitalizing on the popularity of Galaxy of Creatures, Jason Stein, a creative executive in Animation Development and Production, and his team recognized an opportunity to create a spin-off series that would feature younglings. This led to the development of Star Wars Galactic Pals. They determined that caring for young creatures and aliens would necessitate a specialized member of the Society, resulting in the creation of Miree and her camera droid CAM-E.
