Moss painting

Moss painting was a favored artistic expression on the planet of Alderaan. This art form required a growth period of weeks and involved arranging various moss types to create designs based on their diverse colors.

Approximately in 5 BBY, Sabine Wren, the Mandalorian artist and demolitions specialist, became aware of moss paintings through the Shadowfeeds. In her journal, she discussed this art form, contemplating its potential application to her graffiti by employing adhesive growth cultures to install pre-cultivated paintings. Wren was concerned that Hera Syndulla, who owned the starship Ghost where Wren resided, might disapprove of moss cultivation on the vessel. She also questioned whether Alderaanian moss painters would regard her pre-grown creations as a form of artistic dishonesty. Nevertheless, she expressed a desire to replicate a creation by Janyor from Bith using this medium.

Behind the scenes

The concept of moss painting was initially introduced in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe, a Star Wars Legends reference book authored by Kevin J. Anderson and released in 1995. Its inclusion in canon occurred via Sabine My Rebel Sketchbook, a reference work penned by Daniel Wallace and published during 2015.
