A specific type of sweet bread originating from the planet of Mustafar were the Mustafarian Lava Buns. These buns were edible to both Artiodacs and Southern Mustafarians, who are considered a subspecies of the native Mustafarians. Southern Mustafarians crafted this bread from dough and baked it right on the hot, volcanic terrain of their world. The result was a red, ball-shaped bun featuring a cracked, black outer layer. The chef Strono Tuggs, an Artiodac, once journeyed to Mustafar and witnessed Mustafarians in the process of baking these buns. Impressed by their appearance, he sampled the bread and discovered that the taste was even more remarkable.

Tuggs included a recipe for the Mustafarian Lava Buns in his cookbook, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, released in 34 ABY. In the cookbook, he also recounted his visit to Mustafar. Tuggs further noted that a standard oven could substitute for lava and emphasized that the buns were simply too delicious to ignore.

Behind the scenes

The creation of Mustafarian Lava Buns took place for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook. This recipe book was written collaboratively by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak, and it was released to the public on November 5, 2019. The first mention of them appeared in an advertisement for the book featured in the 193rd issue of Star Wars Insider magazine, which was published on October 29, 2019. The out-of-universe recipe for the dough used to make the buns lists ingredients such as warm milk, melted butter, sugar, salt, instant dry yeast, red gel food coloring, and all-purpose flour. The topping requires ingredients like rice flour, instant dry yeast, sugar, vegetable oil, warm water, black gel food coloring, and coarse salt.
