Bread

Bread was a food typically produced by mixing flour with other ingredients to create a dough. This dough was then shaped into loaves or buns before being baked. Among the various types of bread were bucco bread and samana spiced loaves found on Sedri Minor, as well as cuanut bread from Coruscant. Additionally, there were dao-ben steamed buns originating from Akiva, denta bean buns and five-blossom bread from Naboo, haroun bread from Tatooine, munch-fungus loaves from Ryloth, Mustafarian Lava Buns from Mustafar, and ventrin bread on Hynestia Prime. A fried variation was known as Ksharra bread, while muftari bread was distinguished by its salted and spiced flavor.

Bread served as a base for creating dishes like bread pudding and various sandwiches, including nut-paste sandwiches and shawda club sandwiches. The flatbread known as ronto wrappers was specifically utilized for crafting Ronto Wraps. Sometimes, bread was a component of or the entirety of rations. The Galactic Empire, the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and the New Republic incorporated dehydrated polystarch into their rations. This polystarch, when combined with water, underwent a chemical reaction to produce polystarch portion bread. First Order stormtroopers were provided with mealbread in their dining facilities. Some of the ration packs sold on the Wayward Current included both bread and nutrient paste.

Strono Tuggs, a chef, featured recipes for multiple bread types in his cookbook, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook.

Sentient beings that consumed bread included Artiodacs, Chiss, humans, Kiffar, Southern Mustafarians, Twi'leks, Volpai, and Wookiees.

Description

According to Strono Tuggs, an Artiodac chef, as written in his cookbook, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, the essential components for most breads are flour, water, and yeast. These components are combined using various methods to yield diverse bread types. Tuggs stated that bread baking is more scientific than other cooking methods; even a minor error can lead to failure, and all cooks will inevitably burn some bread. Flatbreads were used to hold the ingredients for sandwiches, and they were also used for scooping dips and sauces.

The galaxy contained sayings connected to breads. A saying was inspired by Muftari bread about beings knowing which side of their muftari bread was salted and spiced. Toast was used as a basis for comparison.

History

Before the Imperial Era

During the High Republic Era, bucco bread and samana spiced loaf were among the bread varieties available on the agriworld of Sedri Minor. Burryaga Agaburry, a Wookiee Padawan, considered eating bread while on the Galactic Republic medical frigate Panacea.

Anakin Skywalker, a human male, and his mother, Shmi Skywalker, consumed haroun bread as a child on Tatooine and served it to guests. Within their home in Mos Espa's Slave Quarters Row, Shmi possessed a bread oven.

Denta bean buns, a dessert bread originating from Naboo, were favored by Quarsh Panaka, the Captain of the Royal Naboo Security Forces during Queen Padmé Amidala's reign. Five-blossom bread also came from Naboo and was a favorite of Saché, one of the queen's handmaidens. Amidala, who later became a Senator, received five-blossom bread from a Naboo ambassador during the Clone Wars. She saved it for a special event and offered it when her husband, Anakin Skywalker, visited her at her apartment on Coruscant.

Sandwiches were sold at establishments on Pantora. [Asajj Ventress](/article/asajj_ventress] was hunting a Volpai called Moregi, who was eating a sandwich and throwing pieces of crust to rodents. Quinlan Vos, a Kiffar Jedi Master, purchased one made with local roasted vegetables. Vos was later taunted with foods like freshly baked bread while being held as a prisoner of Count Dooku on Serenno.

At Dex's Diner in Coruscant's CoCo Town, Dexter Jettster served shawda club sandwiches made with toasted or therm-zapped bread. Sandwiches were also consumed in the Unknown Regions. Thalias, a Chiss who was formerly a sky-walker, became caregiver to the sky-walker Che'ri and considered making a lunch of nut-paste sandwiches. Thalias reasoned that she and the girl surely had a liking for nut-paste sandwiches common.

During the Imperial Era

During the Imperial Era on Corellia, hounds were given dog biscuits, which are hard bread pieces with a fishy flavor. Starving sentient beings, including humans like Han Solo and Qi'ra, consumed them for much-needed nutrients. The woman known as Jenra served fluffy, warm, buttered biscuits in her lounge.

Lando Calrissian used a moldy piece of ventrin bread as a fake blaster to his accomplice, the Hynestian Princess Rinetta Gan, to facilitate his escape from imprisonment in the royal palace of Hynestia Prime.

While hiding on Lah'mu, Lyra Erso of the Erso family baked crusty bread. Following Lyra's death, Jyn missed her mother's baking. The planet Inusagi celebrated its sakoola blossom festival annually, but on one occasion, Saw Gerrera and his Partisans infiltrated it alongside Arane Oreida and her partisan group. Before they began killing the guests, Jyn noticed the buffet table served Inusagian delicacies such as fruits, honeys, cheeses, and breads.

The Opaline Creed, a religious group on Crucival, prepared bread pudding with sweet fruits and a charred crust for their holy days. Pira Ten enjoyed eating it, even though it caused her to itch the next morning.

When Chelli Lona Aphra and Luke Skywalker arrived at the Citadel of Ktath'atn, sliced bread was present on the dinner table in front of the Queen of Ktath'atn, who was an abersyn symbiote inside a humanoid body.

Iden Versio consumed cuanut bread with butter and caf at the Diplomat, a hotel in the Federal District of Imperial City on Coruscant. Her father, Admiral Garrick Versio, ate it with steak and roasted vegetables for lunch in his office.

Ciena Ree, a native of Jelucan, went without bread for over two years. She craved it, but only senior Imperial officers could eat real food without appearing weak. Six months after the Battle of Endor, Thane Kyrell performed a mourning ritual learned from Ciena Ree, traditional for the valley kindred of their homeworld, Jelucan. He left out a meal of bread and wine overnight for the spirits. Besides the Rebels lost at Endor, he mourned other deaths, including beings he had known in the Imperial Academy who had died on one of the Death Stars or in other battles serving the Empire.

On Akiva, Norra Wexley's son, Temmin Wexley, once hid on the rooftop of Master Hyor-ka's dao-ben steamed bun shop in Myrra. Temmin was raised by his mother's sister, Esmelle, and her wife, Shirene. At the start of the week, Temmin would bring a basket of bread, fruits, and sometimes wyrg-jerky or arguez sausage for his aunts.

After the Imperial Era

At the conclusion of the war between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic, a battle occurred between the remaining Imperial forces and the New Republic, resulting in starships crashing on Jakku. Some of these wrecked ships contained ration packs with dehydrated veg-meat and polystarch. Unkar Plutt exchanged these survival rations for parts and materials brought by scavengers like Rey. The powdered polystarch was mixed with water, causing a chemical reaction that rapidly expanded and solidified it into a doughy loaf of polystarch portion bread. Mealbread was served to stormtroopers of the First Order, accompanied by meat and numian cream. Mealbread was also a snack that Strono Tuggs enjoyed with a sprinkling of Christophsian sugar. During the journey of the transport barge Wayward Current from the Mooshie Cluster to Canto Bight, crewmembers could buy ration packs containing bread and nutrient paste.

Poe Dameron ordered and consumed a shawda club sandwich at a cantina in Kijimi City before departing Kijimi.

When war erupted between the First Order and the Resistance, Wedge Antilles was retired on Akiva with his wife, Norra Wexley. After accidentally dropping a basket of eggs, Antilles offered to make toast for his stepson, Temmin Wexley, instead of an omelet. Ronto Roasters, a restaurant on Batuu, used a flatbread known as ronto wrappers to wrap its signature Ronto Wraps.

Strono Tuggs' cookbook, published after the Battle of Takodana in 34 ABY, included recipes for five-blossom bread, ronto wrappers, and his approximation of polystarch portion bread. It also featured recipes for munch-fungus loaves from the Twi'lek homeworld of Ryloth and Mustafarian Lava Buns created by Southern Mustafarians on Mustafar.

Behind the scenes

The instant polystarch bread featured in The Force Awakens was created using a practical effect.

In the non-canon LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales episode "Exit from Endor", Anakin Skywalker disliked peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made on rye bread. When his mother, Shmi Skywalker, gave him one made with rye bread, he displayed a disturbing visage and told her that he found her lack of white bread disturbing. She offered him a sandwich on sourdough bread instead, and he cheered.
