Republic soldier

From 25,053 BBY until their disbandment in 1000 BBY, the Republic soldiers served within the Republic Army. These soldiers were under the direct command of the Galactic Republic; however, during wartime, they were augmented by recruits from various Republic planets. The majority of the Army's personnel seemed to consist of Human males. Notable Republic soldiers included Trask Ulgo and Carth Onasi, who were stationed aboard the Republic Endar Spire, a Hammerhead-class cruiser. The ranks held by Republic soldiers included ensign, commander, and captain.

History

The Republic's military forces encompassed local militias and sector forces, which answered to their respective generals rather than the central command, such as the Defense Ministry. To enhance the Republic's defense coordination against the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders, Darth Revan, prior to his fall to the Dark side of the Force, became the first field marshal to oversee all independent units. Nevertheless, the specific nature of the conflict led them to spend more time guarding their capital ships than fighting as ground troops.

During the era of the Great Galactic War, the Republic soldiers underwent professionalization, with millions of volunteers from across numerous planets joining the Republic Army. The Army's logistics network ensured a steady flow of reinforcements to these planets. The Republic Army's initial training consisted of eighteen weeks of drills, evaluations, and physical exercises, followed by up to twelve months of specialized instruction. Infantry divisions participated in combat during eighty percent of engagements against the Sith Empire.

Arms and Equipment

The uniform of Republic soldiers consisted of red and yellow armor worn over what appeared to be a black body suit. Combat suits along with Republic mod armor were also available for Republic troops. Standard issue weaponry for Republic soldiers included blaster rifles, blaster carbines, blaster pistols, disruptor rifles, and heavy repeating blasters. The use of Vibroswords became common for close-quarters combat due to an increase in close-range enemies such as the Sith during the Old Sith Wars. A variety of explosives, including grenades and mines, were also provided to soldiers for combat and demolition tasks.

During the period of the Cold War, Republic Infantry were outfitted with a versatile blaster rifle that could utilize different types of energy cells, a sidearm, grenades, Duraplast Armorweave, a secure Comlink, and a four-day supply of rations.

Behind the scenes

The "Old Republic Trooper" miniature, a common piece from the Champions of the Force set of the Star Wars Miniatures game, is based on the Republic soldier. Another miniature, the "Old Republic Guard," from the Knights of the Old Republic set, also takes its design from the Republic soldier. There is also a miniature named "Old Republic Captain" from the same set that wears the armor of a common soldier but has an in-game commander effect.
