Carth Onasi

Carth Onasi, known as Fleet, was a celebrated Human male soldier and a skilled pilot. He was born on Telos IV, a planet, in 3994 BBY. Later, he started a family there with Morgana, his wife, and they had a son named Dustil. He served in the Republic Naval Starfighter Corps, fighting for the Galactic Republic he deeply cherished. He participated in conflicts like the Mandalorian Wars against the expanding Mandalorian clans, earning accolades for his courage in battle. During the war, Onasi served under Admiral Saul Karath, who became his trusted ally and mentor. After the war, Onasi intended to leave the Navy and return to Telos to be with his family.

However, these plans were disrupted when war heroes Revan and Malak, two Jedi who had decided to fight in the war, betrayed the Republic. They became Sith Lords and took many Jedi who had followed them to war, as well as Republic soldiers who had served under them, to create a Sith Empire that would oppose the Republic. During this conflict, Karath attacked Telos, bombing the planet from his flagship, the Leviathan, until it was rendered uninhabitable to prove his loyalty to the Sith. The orbital bombardment resulted in Morgana's death, while Dustil, who was Force-sensitive, was kidnapped by the Sith for training as a Dark Jedi. Onasi vowed to avenge his family's death and the destruction of his homeworld by seeking revenge against Karath, holding this grudge for three years.

In 3956 BBY, Onasi played a vital role in the search for the Star Forge, the Sith's highly productive space factory that continuously supplied their fleet with new ships. He was stationed on the Hammerhead-class cruiser Endar Spire over Taris when the Sith attacked it. Malak, who had usurped control from Revan, now led the Sith. Revan, the former leader, was reprogrammed by the Jedi, his memories of being a Jedi and a Sith erased, and placed in the Republic's armed forces aboard the Spire. There, he encountered Onasi as they both fled the doomed ship. They temporarily stayed on Taris while searching for Bastila Shan, a Jedi Knight and the only other known survivor of the attack on the Endar Spire.

After finding her, the three escaped Taris, and Onasi became the pilot of the Ebon Hawk, their personal starship. He transported the trio and a growing group of allies across the galaxy as they searched for Star Maps that would lead them to the Star Forge. This mission was assigned to them by the Jedi Council. During their travels, Onasi found his son, who was turned away from the Sith ways by Revan and his father. He also achieved his revenge against Karath, whom the group killed aboard the Leviathan. After the Star Forge was located and destroyed during the Battle of Rakata Prime, Onasi was promoted to admiral in the Republic Navy. He took a leading role in helping the Republic recover from the two subsequent wars. As part of this effort, Onasi later defended Telos from another Sith attack during another conflict that arose from the Jedi Civil War initiated by Revan and Malak nearly a decade earlier.

Biography

Mandalorian Wars

Carth Onasi with Republic Navy officers

Carth Onasi, also known as Fleet, resided on Telos IV, his planet of origin located in the Outer Rim. He lived there with his wife, Morgana, and their son, Dustil. He initially served in the planetary militia before joining the Republic Navy, where he was first stationed at an orbital watch station above the planet Serroco.

In the year 3964 BBY, he was a helmsman aboard the Inexpugnable-class tactical command ship Courageous and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. It was around this time that he became widely known by his pilot nickname, Fleet. He participated in multiple battles, including those of Vanquo and Serroco, where he encountered Zayne Carrick, a fugitive Padawan disguised as a janitor named Shad Camper.

The two would later cross paths again when "Shad Camper" secretly boarded Onasi's cargo ship. Carrick requested that Onasi take him to Admiral Saul Karath because of a vision he had experienced, which foretold a Mandalorian attack on Serroco. Initially, Onasi dismissed him as a madman. However, after Carrick demonstrated that he was indeed a Jedi, Onasi agreed to take him to Karath, although he warned that they might face severe consequences for interrupting the admiral during battle preparations.

Zayne Carrick proving his Jedi abilities to an initially skeptical Carth Onasi by pulling his blaster from him

Onasi escorted him to Admiral Karath on the bridge of the Courageous. Karath was impressed with Onasi, not for bringing back Shad Camper, but for delivering the fugitive Zayne Carrick. As Carrick protested his innocence regarding the Padawan Massacre on Taris, Karath instructed Onasi to inform the Revanchists, the Jedi who had chosen to fight in the Mandalorian Wars, about Carrick's capture. Instead, Onasi attempted to contact a Jedi named Squint, who Carrick claimed could prove his innocence. Despite being unable to reach Squint, who was on a mission elsewhere, and still harboring doubts about Carrick's innocence, Onasi believed his account of the vision predicting the destruction of the Stereb cities. Consequently, Onasi contacted seventeen cities on the planet's surface and activated tornado alarms in an effort to drive people into underground shelters. As predicted, Carrick's vision came to pass when the Mandalorians launched nuclear missiles, resulting in billions of deaths on Serroco.

After Carrick was confined to a cell, Onasi visited him and informed him about the possibility of survival on the surface. However, the Courageous was attacked by the Mandalorians. While the rest of the crew was ordered to evacuate, Onasi, Admiral Karath, and other Republic forces stood their ground on the vessel as Mandalorian shock troopers boarded it. Cornered in the brig, Karath ordered Zayne Carrick's cell to be opened in order to retrieve his lightsaber to cut into the cargo bays. However, his lightsaber was kept on board Onasi's ship, the Deadweight. Carrick had been using the Force to pry out the bolts on the walls for several days and managed to escape, meeting Onasi aboard the ship. Karath reluctantly took Carrick with them as they fled the Courageous on the Deadweight.

Carrick "escapes" from Onasi.

Shortly after escaping from the Mandalorians, the Deadweight received a transmission from Eejee, Arkoh Adasca's servant, requesting Karath's presence at a meeting aboard the Arkanian Legacy. After learning about the exogorths, Karath quickly changed course to the Legacy. Onasi accompanied Karath, Morris, and Carrick onto Adasca's ship and was equally shocked as his superiors by the arrival of Mandalore the Ultimate, the leader of the Mandalorians.

Disgusted by what he witnessed during the exogorths' testing before Saul Karath and Mandalore the Ultimate, Carth Onasi excused himself to the Deadweight. However, Onasi only went there to retrieve Zayne Carrick's gear and lightsaber. He returned the gear to Carrick when he found Lucien Draay and him standing near piles of destroyed HK-24 units. Carrick devised a plan to thwart Adasca, which involved tricking Mandalore the Ultimate into believing that Adasca had lured him into a trap. Carrick, disguised as a Mandalorian, shoved Onasi upon their return to the observatory, creating a diversion for Carrick to get close enough to Mandalore and Adasca. Lucien revealed himself, and believing that Adasca had betrayed him, Mandalore and his warriors opened fire on the Jedi and Adasca's HK-24 units. During the brawl, Gorman Vandrayk, an elderly scientist, seized control of the exogorths and plunged them into the Arkanian Legacy observatory, killing Arkoh Adasca. Onasi, Carrick, and the Jedi managed to escape, although Mandalore also escaped to his shuttle. Saul Karath was injured during the fight and had to be carried back to the Deadweight. Morvis instructed Onasi to take Carrick, but Onasi did not consider Carrick an enemy and allowed him to go free, bidding him farewell. Karath, Onasi, and Morvis successfully escaped the crumbling ship in the Deadweight and later reported the events on the Legacy to the Republic.

Despite the successful escape, Onasi was removed from his bridge post for "losing" Zayne Carrick on the Arkanian Legacy. He was reassigned to Lance Squadron, whose Aurek fighters were preventing Carrick from reaching Coruscant several months later. When Moomo Williwaw—the ship Carrick was on—entered Coruscant space, the squadron moved to intercept. Onasi demanded that the ship identify itself, only to discover that "Shad Camper" was indeed on board. Unable to let Zayne escape again, he commanded the squadron to intercept the intruder. When they chased the Williwaw to the Swiftsure, Onasi's wingmate noticed that the Deadweight was flying away. He allowed his supply carrier to go, knowing that Zayne was on it. Despite letting Carrick escape once more, Onasi redeemed his post on the bridge of Swiftsure and was present for the capture of the Gladiator.

Onasi reunites with his family after the war.

Onasi continued his service with the Republic forces, fighting alongside the Revanchists for the remainder of the war, which eventually began to turn in the Republic's favor. The Republic and its Jedi allies ultimately brought the conflict to an end when Mandalore the Ultimate was killed and the majority of the Mandalorian forces were destroyed during the war's final battle. While the Revanchists pursued the remaining Mandalorians into unknown territories, Onasi and the Republic forces returned home, celebrated as heroes for their contributions to protecting the Republic.

Jedi Civil War

Not long after the Mandalorian Wars concluded, Revan, the former Republic hero, made a return with a Sith armada to wage war against the Republic. Soon, the ranks of the Sith forces swelled with traitorous Republic servicemen. Among these defectors, one name stood out to Onasi above all others: Admiral Saul Karath.

Onasi held Saul in high regard as a mentor and a hero, so he was devastated when Darth Malak, Revan's apprentice, ordered Saul to bomb Telos as a test of his allegiance to the Sith, citing its strategic importance to the Republic. Upon hearing this news, Onasi rushed back to his home planet, but he arrived too late to save his wife, who died in his arms. To compound his emotional distress, his son had vanished, and despite Onasi's efforts to find him, he eventually concluded that Dustil was dead. These events profoundly affected Onasi, leading him to resolve never to trust anyone again, lest he suffer another betrayal. He vowed that if he ever had the chance, he would kill Saul Karath for what he had done.

Eventually, Onasi found himself aboard the Endar Spire, primarily serving as an advisor and escorting Bastila Shan, a Jedi whose abilities were crucial to the success of the war effort. However, the ship came under attack and was boarded by Sith forces over the Outer Rim world of Taris. When Bastila and the remaining crew abandoned ship, Onasi stayed behind to await and assist any survivors. However, only one Republic soldier remained. The pair then boarded the last escape pod and crash-landed on the planet below.

The other soldier was, in fact, Revan, although he had been mentally reprogrammed by the Jedi Council and was using a different name. Revan was knocked unconscious during the escape pod's rough landing, and Onasi had to care for him for some time before he regained consciousness. Once Revan awoke, they began exploring Taris, seeking information about Bastila's whereabouts. They learned of other escape pods that had crashed in the Undercity and struck a deal with Gadon Thek, the leader of the Hidden Beks swoop gang.

After successfully rescuing Bastila and picking up a street urchin named Mission Vao and a Wookiee named Zaalbar, the group worked to find a way off-planet. Their opportunity came in the form of the starship known as the Ebon Hawk, which was held by local crime lord Davik Kang. The group enlisted the aid of the Mandalorian Canderous Ordo to steal it. They also needed clearance codes to escape from Taris, so three members of the group infiltrated the local Sith base and obtained the codes. After retrieving the remaining members, they bypassed the Sith blockade and escaped Taris.

Following their escape from the Sith bombardment of Taris, Onasi became the pilot of the newly acquired Ebon Hawk, which the group then used to reach the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine. As Bastila discussed the matter of their Force-sensitive companion with the Dantooine Council, Onasi expressed his dissatisfaction with being "left out of the loop." Eventually, it was decided to train Revan, who had no knowledge of his former identity, as a Jedi. Shortly thereafter, the Council assigned Bastila and the new Jedi Padawan the task of discovering the location of the Star Forge, a mission that Onasi begrudgingly assisted them with, despite feeling that he could be doing more good on the front lines.

The journey to find the Star Forge took the crew of the Ebon Hawk to the planets Tatooine, Kashyyyk, Manaan, and Korriban. On these four planets, the group searched for ancient artifacts known as Star Maps. Onasi grew suspicious of Revan's presence among them, questioning why the Jedi Council would send a novice Padawan on such a quest. Eventually, Onasi demanded that Revan tell him what the Jedi Council had revealed to him, something Bastila herself refused to do. Revan did inform Onasi of the Force bond that he and Bastila shared. However, Onasi remained unconvinced that this was the only reason for Revan's presence, still unaware of Revan's true identity as the former Dark Lord, the real reason behind Revan's involvement.

Revenge

Eventually, the ever-growing group was captured by the Leviathan, Saul Karath's vessel. At long last, Onasi found himself face to face with the admiral, but a force cage stood between him and his revenge. Karath interrogated the group and tortured them all when Revan refused to divulge any information. Faced with unwavering resistance, Karath eventually gave up and left them in their cages, but not before delivering a strong dose of "Sith mercy."

The resourceful team soon escaped imprisonment with the help of a decoy member of the party, and Onasi, Revan, and Bastila set out to free the Ebon Hawk from the docking bay. On the bridge, they confronted Saul Karath, allowing Onasi to finally exact his revenge, although Revan advised him to avoid succumbing to his hatred. Nevertheless, Karath was mortally wounded, and in his final moments, he revealed a horrifying truth to Onasi: that his mysterious companion was none other than the amnesiac Revan, the former Dark Lord of the Sith. Furious, Onasi reluctantly accepted the judgment of the other party members to continue the quest but remained watchful of Revan, whom he had recently begun to trust and consider a comrade, for any sign of a relapse. Eventually, he admitted that while he wanted to blame Revan for his losses, he could not bring himself to hate him. Onasi confessed that he had exacted his revenge when Saul Karath was killed, but it did not bring him peace. He then offered Revan his loyalty, along with a promise that, if necessary, he would save Revan from himself.

During their travels, Onasi also encountered his lost son, Dustil, on the Sith planet of Korriban. He was once again forced to confront his hatred of the Sith when it was revealed that his son had joined them, blaming his father for failing to protect the family. After finding proof that the Sith had lied to Dustil about the death of a classmate, Revan and Onasi were finally able to convince the boy of the evils of the Sith, and Carth was proud when his son abandoned the dark side. Dustil told his father that he would meet him on Telos later, where they could begin to repair their relationship.

The Star Forge

After discovering Star Maps on Dantooine, Tatooine, Kashyyyk, Manaan, and Korriban, Revan's crew followed the combined coordinates to the location of the Star Forge. Onasi sent word to the Republic fleet, but before they could prepare a plan of attack, a disruptor field surrounding the planet that the Star Forge was orbiting caused the Ebon Hawk to crash toward the planet's surface.

Onasi managed to land the ship on a beach, but its stabilizers were badly damaged. While Revan, Juhani, and Jolee Bindo set off to disable the disruptor field, Onasi made repairs to the Ebon Hawk. When the three Jedi returned, Onasi was shocked to learn that Bastila had fallen to the dark side but was relieved that Revan remained loyal to the Jedi and the Republic. With renewed determination, the crew set off for the Star Forge.

Onasi played a part in the battle that ensued, as the Republic fleet arrived to attack the Star Forge. Amidst the chaos, Onasi docked the Ebon Hawk on the Sith factory, allowing Revan to defeat Darth Malak and redeem Bastila, who used her battle meditation to turn the tide of the battle in the Republic's favor. He then piloted the ship and all of its crew off the factory just before the Republic fleet sent it crashing into the sun below.

The recovering Republic

Sometime after his involvement in the Battle of Rakata Prime, Onasi was promoted to admiral in the Republic Navy. As Revan departed for the Unknown Regions to confront a growing threat to the Republic, he entrusted Onasi with the task of maintaining the Republic's strength. Onasi would later be instrumental in bringing Meetra Surik back into known space aboard the Harbinger, ensuring her urgent transport to Telos. When Surik was "detained" at Citadel Station until the Sojourn arrived but then left for the planet's surface, Onasi informed Grenn that the Republic only intended to observe Surik, not detain her.

Onasi was later compelled to carry out his orders and confront his past as the Sith launched a second attack on Telos, this time under the command of Darth Nihilus. Onasi vowed that he would not allow Telos to be devastated again as he led the Republic fleet into battle and successfully repelled the enemy fleet. Shortly after the battle, Onasi requested an audience with Surik, the hero of the battle, who had sabotaged the Sith flagship Ravager and killed Nihilus. Wishing Surik a safe journey, he asked her to search for Revan in the Unknown Regions and, if she found him, to deliver a simple message: "Simply tell him that Admiral Onasi is following his orders."

Approximately three centuries later, during the Cold War, Onasi was featured in a holorecord of the Mandalorian Wars created by Gnost-Dural, a Kel Dor Jedi Master. By that time, Onasi had long passed away, and Tatooine was one of three planets rumored to be his final resting place. A holostatue of Onasi was erected in the Leisure Garden section of the Axial Park in Coronet City on Corellia, alongside statues of Revan and his other companions, in memory of their deeds.

Personality and traits

Onasi, wearing his signature orange jacket

Carth Onasi was, above all else, a loyal and heroic individual, placing his dedication to the Republic and its ideals as his highest priority. His family was a very, very close second, being "everything" to him. Even after years of silence from Revan following their shared experiences, he remained steadfast in following Revan's orders to serve the Republic.

Carth harbored a deep-seated hatred for Malak and the Sith due to their embrace of the dark side and their betrayal of the Republic. However, his contempt was even stronger for the non-Force-sensitive soldiers who chose to defect. He believed their actions were more reprehensible than those of the Sith, as they willingly chose evil without the influence of the dark side, thus deserving no leniency.

The devastating betrayal by Saul Karath, to whom he had been so loyal, instilled in him a pervasive expectation of betrayal from everyone. Revan had to demonstrate considerable patience to earn Onasi's trust. Ultimately, Revan presented Onasi with his greatest challenge. He was forced to place his trust in the very person he held most responsible, even above Saul, for the destruction of Telos and the troubles plaguing his beloved Republic. When Revan ultimately rejected the dark side, Onasi was overjoyed.

Following the destruction of Telos, Onasi, feeling he had lost everything, dedicated himself entirely to the fleet, declaring that "Hunting Saul was my only purpose." However, even after avenging himself by killing Saul, Onasi remained troubled and unable to find peace. The revelation of his companion's true identity as Revan did not evoke hatred, but rather a sense of responsibility to act as Revan's conscience and the voice of the Republic. This act of forgiveness ultimately led him to inner peace.

Abilities

Carth Onasi and Revanchists fight Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders

Onasi was a committed soldier and a skilled strategist, capable of handling a wide array of weaponry with efficiency and expertise, though his true forte was blaster pistols. He possessed exceptional speed in drawing his weapon and was adept at wielding two weapons simultaneously.

Trask Ulgo considered Onasi to be "one of the Republic's best pilots." His piloting prowess was evident throughout his travels with Revan, during which he navigated the Ebon Hawk across the galaxy. Notable instances of his skill include escaping the Sith orbital bombardment of Taris in the Ebon Hawk, safely landing the Hawk on Lehon despite stabilizer damage, and successfully breaching the Sith fleet surrounding the Star Forge with minimal starfighter support. Onasi also exhibited mechanical aptitude, diagnosing the Hawk's problems after the Lehon landing and subsequently repairing the ship.

Equipment

Carth Onasi wielding his personal blaster

Onasi's attire consisted of a light brown jacket, paired with dark brown trousers and black boots. He carried a brown blaster holster fastened to his right hip. Later, during the First Jedi Purge, he donned a heavy armor suit in red and white.

He was equipped with a personal blaster pistol of Arkanian design, enhanced with Republic technology. It was easily identifiable due to the presence of his family symbol. In addition to his signature weapon, he also carried a standard Republic blaster pistol.

Meetra Surik, at some point during her journeys, acquired a blaster pistol adorned with the Onasi family crest. It is possible that Onasi lost the pistol sometime after his adventures with Revan, although it is also possible that this was simply a replica, or a weapon belonging to some other member of the Onasi family.

Behind the scenes

Concept art of Onasi

Carth Onasi was conceived as a character for the 2003 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, where he is available as a playable character. David Gaider wrote Onasi's dialogue in the first game, while Raphael Sbarge provided his voice in both the game and its 2004 sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Before Sbarge was cast, Mark Meer voiced Carth in an early demo version of the game. In the games, his name is misspelled as "Carth Onassi" in the player character's dialogue texts. Onasi is later mentioned in the in-game Codex for the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic, and the 2012 reference guide Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia identified Tatooine as one of Onasi's possible resting places. A game update for The Old Republic later made Onasi's outfit available for purchase by players through the game's Cartel Market system. Onasi, along with Zaalbar, Bastila Shan, Canderous Ordo, and Mission Vao, drew inspiration from James Ohlen's work on roleplaying campaigns for West End Games.

Alternate choices

Depending on the player's choices, several different outcomes are possible in Knights of the Old Republic. Should the player, as Revan, choose to reclaim the title of Dark Lord of the Sith in the game's non-canonical ending, Onasi, facing overwhelming odds, will flee upon being informed. As a result, he will not appear in the sequel if the player indicates that Revan embraced the dark side, and will instead be replaced by Admiral Cede.

Similar to how the male Revan can pursue a romantic relationship with Bastila, the female Revan can do so with Onasi. If the player portrays Revan as a light-sided female in The Sith Lords, Onasi will confess his feelings for Revan to Meetra Surik, the game's main player character. The character of Darth Traya will also comment that "it would have helped had she made him understand, but a hero of the Republic, no matter how brave, cannot understand war as Revan did."

Furthermore, Onasi originally had alternative lines for his devastation in finding out who Revan is if the player is female and has romanced Onasi up to that point. If the player has both romanced Onasi and turned to the dark side, then the player will have the option of killing Onasi herself or have Bastila finish it. In a cut-scene that did not make it to the final game, Revan had a third option to kill Bastila and die aboard the Star Forge with Onasi. It was not placed in the final version because the developers did not have enough time to finish it for the game. However, these features can be returned to the game through modding.

Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

In The Sith Lords, if Meetra Surik establishes sufficient influence with HK-47, the droid will ridicule Onasi's distrustful nature as displayed in Knights of the Old Republic.

If Revan is established as light side, and a male Surik is played, then Mical is established as reporting directly to Onasi. In cut content of the game however, if Surik is a female, then later in the game, Mical would report to Onasi, again revealing that he has found that which hunts the Jedi and informing Onasi of the impending attack on Telos.

Comics

Onasi's appearance as a helmsman in Flashpoint

According to John Jackson Miller, the author of the Knights of the Old Republic comic series, the bearded, helmeted figure on the bridge of the Courageous in the series' eighth issue was not originally intended to be Onasi. Dustin Weaver, the artist, was not instructed to depict any specific individual, and therefore based the man's appearance on Miller himself. However, the writer now considers it the first appearance of Onasi in the comic series. Onasi later assumed a significant role in several of the series' story arcs.

Miller has also stated that, among the secondary characters originating from the two Knights of the Old Republic video games, Onasi was his favorite to write, particularly in regard to the "big-brother/kid-brother dynamic" evident in Onasi's interactions with Zayne Carrick.
