Gnost-Dural, a Kel Dor male, held the esteemed rank of Jedi Master. This period also saw conflict with the Sith Empire that had been brought back to power.

Biography

Apprenticeship

Padawan Gnost-Dural

As a Kel Dor possessing Force-sensitivity, Gnost-Dural underwent training in the ways of the Force by the Jedi Order from a young age, studying at the Jedi Temple located on Coruscant while he was a Padawan. While training as a Consular, Jedi Master Shol Bestros advised the senior Padawan to maintain a journal in order to document his experiences and thoughts. These records would serve as a personal reference and provide material for the Temple Archives. Gnost-Dural's exploration of the Jedi Order's early history led him to rediscover forgotten accounts of Tython, the Force Wars, and the Infinite Empire, discoveries that would later be of great importance to the Order. Continuing his development as a historian, Gnost-Dural crafted his own lightsaber with a green blade as part of his training.

Great Galactic War

Gnost-Dural's first duel against a Sith

Four years after he began his journal, the Jedi High Council granted Gnost-Dural the rank of Jedi Knight. During the ceremony, the Kel Dor pledged to uphold the Jedi Code and defend the Galactic Republic as part of his commitment to the Force and the Order. On that same day, news arrived on Coruscant concerning a violent assault on the Tingel Arm; this event would later be recognized as the first sign of the resurgent Sith Empire, which had not been seen since the Great Hyperspace War nearly two thousand years earlier.

Gnost-Dural, along with many other capable Knights, was sent to the Minos Cluster, with the hope of quickly and decisively ending the Sith offensive there. The conflict dragged on as the Sith and Jedi clashed. Gnost-Dural spent several months entrenched on the world of Eliad, battling numerous Sith troopers in the early weeks. He only encountered a lightsaber-wielding Sith warrior once. Despite his initial apprehension, the Jedi quickly recognized the dark sider's overconfidence as his weakness and defeated him. Gnost-Dural took the slain Sith's weapon, hoping to eventually donate it to the Temple Archives on Coruscant for study and preservation.

In the following weeks, Gnost-Dural was reassigned to the Republic Fleet, where he served under the command of Admiral [Greik] and confronted and defeated the Imperial Battle Group at Bothawui. Despite the victory, the planet was attacked a second time, which resulted in the death of Master Belth Allusis.

After years of combat on the front lines of what became known as the Great Galactic War, Gnost-Dural's requests to the High Council were finally approved, and he returned to Coruscant and the Temple Archives to research the Sith's origins. Gnost-Dural compiled a report for the Council during his research, providing a historical account of the Sith Empire and arguing that the presumed-dead Sith Lord Naga Sadow was actually the Sith Emperor directing the war against the Republic and the Jedi.

Jedi Master

Gnost-Dural eventually achieved the rank of Jedi Master and became the keeper of the Jedi Archives. Following the signing of the Treaty of Coruscant, the Jedi High Council charged him with developing a new timeline of events. His research uncovered previously unknown details about the war, which formed the foundation for a new Jedi Library.

In 3640 BBY, Gnost-Dural received assistance from intelligence agent Theron Shan in locating and destroying the Ascendant Spear. The pair infiltrated the facility, and Dural confronted his former apprentice Kana Terrid, who had become Darth Karrid, to allow Shan time to sabotage the station. Dural fought and killed her apprentices, but Karrid captured and interrogated him. Dural tricked her into traveling to Duros, where she was killed in the ensuing battle.

Jedi colony

During the Eternal Empire conquest, Gnost-Dural commanded the battle on the swamp world of Mimban. He and Tau Idair fought in a long campaign against the Eternal Empire, and they were the only ones who lived. After the conflict, with the Jedi numbers reduced and Grand Master Satele Shan in hiding, Dural, as one of the remaining members of the Jedi High Council, took many Jedi and civilian volunteers to establish a secret colony on Ossus. He and Idair recruited others to their colony, including the doctor Archiban Frodrick Kimble and Jedi Knight Nadia Grell.

In 3628 BBY, the colony was discovered by Imperials, and Master Gnost-Dural oversaw the evacuation with Doctor Kimble and Nadia Grell. He welcomed the arrival and assistance of the Eternal Alliance's Commander, assigning him to his informal apprentice and the colony's security chief Tau Idair.

Meridian Complex

During the Meridian Complex assault, Master Dural enlisted as many Jedi as possible to form a ground defense force, including some Green Jedi, and later sought assistance from the Commander. Gnost-Dural, the Commander, and the Sith Lana Beniko traveled to Corellia aboard General Daeruun's personal vessel. Master Dural and Lana discussed the philosophy of the Force on the ship before separating to engage in battle. He later encountered the Commander, Tau Idair, and Arn Peralun, urging them to pursue Malgus and fight together. Although Malgus escaped, the Republic ultimately prevailed.

Dantooine

Upon the return of the Commander, Arn Peralun, and Aryn Leneer from their mission to the ancient Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, where they had been looking into the whereabouts of Darth Malgus, Gnost-Dural called a meeting with those he deemed the Order's most critical representatives to discuss the next steps in rebuilding their ranks. Among those selected by Master Gnost-Dural to attend were Sal-Deron, Tau Idair, and Vinyor Tesh, along with the Dantooine mission team. Despite Tesh's objection to Leneer's presence, given her departure from the Order, Peralun defended her inclusion, and Gnost-Dural agreed.

Personality and traits

Above all else, Master Gnost-Dural was a historian, dedicated to documenting galactic history and the accomplishments of significant individuals. He maintained journals for this purpose and mentioned to the Eternal Alliance's leader his intention to dedicate a chapter to the galactic hero's exploits.

Master Dural founded the colony on Ossus with the intention of safeguarding the Jedi and preserving their teachings, isolated from the galaxy. He acted quickly to evacuate it during the Imperial invasion to uphold this objective.

Unlike many Jedi, Gnost appeared willing to consider alternative perspectives, as demonstrated in his conversation with Lana Beniko, where he acknowledged that the Sith's pursuit of power was not necessarily linked to the subjugation of others.

Powers and abilities

Gnost-Dural had the ability to use both telekinesis and Force speed. He was a master of lightsaber combat, with proficiency in Soresu, Djem So, and Juyo. When fighting, he used a single-bladed Jedi lightsaber with a green blade.

Behind the scenes

Master Gnost-Dural

Lance Henriksen provided the voice for Gnost-Dural. He was a key character in The Old Republic: Annihilation. Although he was a major character in supplementary material for The Old Republic, the game itself did not feature him or mention him until the Shadow of Revan and Knights of the Eternal Throne expansions. He was originally planned to appear in an early version of the first expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic, which would have included the planet Ziost and a storyline for the Sith Warrior class centered around the Jedi Master. He ultimately appeared in update 5.10 Jedi Under Siege and was voiced by Fred Tatasciore.

Gnost-Dural was intended to be mentioned in the short story Quite A Story To Tell, which takes place after the events of Star Wars: The Old Republic: Onslaught, but his name was later replaced with Sal-Deron. Caitlin Sullivan Kelly, the author, later explained that the change was made because Gnost-Dural's fate was uncertain for Imperial characters after Jedi Under Siege, and they wanted to avoid implying that certain choices were more canonical.

Gameplay alternatives

Jedi Under Siege

Imperial players encounter Gnost-Dural alongside Darth Malgus. After defeating him, Malgus initially intends to leave the Jedi Master to die but then leaves his fate to the player. The player can choose to order Malgus to kill Gnost-Dural, earning dark side points, or take him prisoner, earning light side points. Gnost-Dural will also recount the player's most significant fallen foes upon being defeated.

Republic players first meet Gnost-Dural at the Jedi colony on Ossus, where he acknowledges their respective player class and remarks that it's time they had a chapter all their own, but that would sadly have to wait.

Throughout the evacuation efforts, Gnost-Dural encourages Tau Idair to take on a Padawan of her own, counseling her to overcome her survivor's guilt.
