Mical

Mical, also known as "the Disciple," was a male Human Jedi Master who served as a diplomat for the Galactic Republic following the Jedi Civil War. As a well-informed historian, he was among those tasked with reaching out to any surviving Jedi and persuading them to rejoin the Republic. Meetra Surik, the Jedi Exile, encountered him while searching for the Lost Jedi, and he became a member of the Ebon Hawk crew, perhaps due to his long-held admiration for her. He became her unofficial Padawan, continuing the training he had started as a child and evolving into a Jedi Consular. Following his travels with Surik, he dedicated himself to the restoration of the Jedi Order and eventually served as a Master on the newly formed Jedi High Council. Furthermore, he rose to become one of the Order's most prominent historians.

Biography

Early life

Mical exhibited Force-sensitive abilities from a young age, possibly originating from a Mid Rim colony. He was brought to the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine to receive instruction in the ways of the Jedi. He developed a certain infatuation with Meetra Surik after she taught his class of younglings how to perceive the Force resonating within others. In comparing her to Master Vrook Lamar, Mical observed that while Vrook possessed extensive knowledge, he lacked Surik's natural leadership and mentoring qualities.

As Mical matured, the Mandalorian Wars intensified. Against the wishes of the Jedi Council, many Jedi had joined the conflict, including Revan, Malak, and Surik, the Jedi Mical had hoped would accept him as a Padawan. Consequently, few masters remained, and by the time Mical was ready for apprenticeship, there was no one suitable to train him. He was among many who were denied the path of the Jedi during this period, partly due to his own doubts following the exile of his mentor, leading him to choose service to the Republic instead.

Reunion with Meetra Surik

Following the Jedi Civil War, Mical was among the few who continued to differentiate between the Jedi and the Sith. With the Jedi largely absent, he aimed to preserve their history through the study of their teachings and the collection of artifacts. Upon hearing that a Jedi had traveled to Dantooine, he visited the ruins of the Jedi Enclave, but found no sign of them. Instead, he encountered Meetra Surik, who informed him of her search for the remaining Jedi Masters. Mical offered his knowledge and skills to her quest, which aligned with his own goals, and was welcomed into her company.

Although Mical specialized in history, he also possessed some medical training, allowing him to serve as a makeshift medic aboard the Ebon Hawk. He also instructed Surik in a meditation technique designed to replenish her personal Force reservoir.

Initially, Mical was secretive about his past involvement with the Jedi and withheld his real name, using "Disciple" instead. After gaining Surik's trust, he revealed that he had met her as a young student at the Jedi Enclave and shared how his connection to the Force had diminished since then. Surik offered to train him in the ways of the Force, which he eagerly accepted, finally becoming her Padawan and adopting the role of a Jedi Consular.

As they journeyed together, Mical struggled to conceal his feelings for Surik. Despite such affections being forbidden to Jedi, Mical believed that the Jedi teachings contained fundamental flaws. He felt that the Jedi were overly detached from everyday life and from the very emotions that made them sentient beings. Nevertheless, while he never denied his forbidden love for Surik, it ultimately manifested as little more than flattery and innocent flirtation. This created tension with Atton Rand, who also harbored feelings for Surik.

While aboard the Ebon Hawk, Mical secretly communicated with his Republic commanders, keeping his true mission hidden from everyone, including Surik. Upon learning that Darth Nihilus was en route to Telos IV, Mical sent a message to his Republic superiors, alerting them to the impending danger.

Throughout their travels, Mical meticulously studied information about Revan and the Sith, identifying a pattern and strategy in Revan's attacks during the Jedi Civil War. He reached the alarming conclusion that Revan's precise strikes against the Republic were not intended to subdue it. Instead, Revan's tactics appeared geared towards conquering the galaxy to unite it under a single banner, possibly in preparation for an unseen threat. Kreia overheard his analysis and ambushed him, forcing him to forget his discoveries until she deemed the time appropriate for him to remember.

After Surik's meeting with the Council members, she distanced herself from her companions. When she confided in Mical that the Council had informed her that she was unknowingly compelling her companions to follow her, Mical offered her comfort. He argued that the Council's judgment stemmed from arrogance, as they denied the very emotions that made them sentient beings. He reassured her that he and all her other companions were following her out of their own free will. He remained with Surik until the conclusion of their battle against the Sith. Later, he was left behind when Surik embarked on her journey to find Revan.

Famous Jedi Historian

Following her defeat by Surik, Kreia offered to share her vision of the future. She predicted that Mical would dedicate himself to rebuilding the Jedi Order and would eventually serve on the new Jedi Council, albeit "reluctantly, as all good men do." Kreia's vision proved accurate, as Master Mical became recognized as one of the greatest Jedi Historians during the Cold War. His lasting contribution was the archive he established in the Cron Drift, which would be explored by adventurers and archaeologists, and Mical's holocron would be recovered and entrusted to the Jedi Order.

Behind the scenes

Mical was conceived by Obsidian Entertainment as a companion character in the 2004 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Like most companions, his character was written by Chris Avellone. His voice was provided by Greg Ellis.

The Disciple appears in cutscenes on Dantooine regardless of the player's gender, but he is only available as a party member if the main character is female (a male Exile is instead joined by Brianna, the Handmaiden, much earlier in the game). Surik has the option to train Mical, turning him into a Jedi Consular. (In the Champions of the Force miniature set, the Jedi Consular figure bears a resemblance to Mical, although no specific name is given.)

Throughout the game, he is consistently referred to as "Disciple"; the name Mical is only mentioned if the Exile is male—during Mical's conversation with Admiral Carth Onasi (or Cede if Revan is set to be dark early in the game; however, the Mical-Cede conversation is bugged, as Cede's hologram does not show and Mical is talking to empty space). This cutscene is not accessible to the female Surik, as Mical has already joined her party, and therefore the player will not hear his name. In the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, players with the Archaeology crew skill can dispatch their companion to explore Mical's legacy.

Alternate dark side ending

Disciple's dark side portrait.

If Meetra Surik embraces the dark side (and is female), Mical will follow her. Darth Traya foresees that he will abandon all Jedi beliefs and instead dedicate himself to politics, becoming a wise, steady, yet detached Senator representing a Mid Rim colony (similar to Darth Sidious). His dark side appearance, as shown to the left, features his blond hair turning gray and his eyes taking on the yellow hue of a Sith. Furthermore, if Surik has sufficient influence over Mical, he can be trained to become a Dark Jedi Consular.

In an earlier version of the dark side storyline, Mical was intended to be attacked by Atton Rand, who had been corrupted by the dark side. He was also meant to guide Surik to hidden Jedi and Sith holocrons. Similar to other content, these ideas were ultimately cut from the final game, although they remain in the game files.

Alternate male Surik ending

After meeting Surik in the enclave, Mical went back to Khoonda and waited for the next transport departing Dantooine. While still on the planet, he reached out to Admiral Carth Onasi and informed him that he had located Surik, whom the Admiral had been trying to find since his escape from Citadel Station. It is plausible that after Surik departed known space, Mical underwent training to become a Jedi when the Jedi Order began its reconstruction.
