Ontotho existed as a planet densely covered in forested areas, and its inhabitants populated several different zones.
Ontotho, a world shrouded in fog, featured both mesas and forests. Due to the presence of tambic gas within its atmosphere, a violet-colored snow fell, even in the planet's warmer areas. This snow, possessing a very low freezing temperature, would then transform into a fog that permeated the valleys and streets of its cities. Though considered aesthetically pleasing, the snow held a poisonous quality for humans if ingested in large quantities.
At a point far back in history, Ontotho received a visit from the Zeffonians, a species whose Force-sensitive members were devoted to the Life Wind and constructed Temples to study it. The Zeffo people erected one such Temple on Ontotho, placing a Tomb Guardian within to safeguard its mysteries.
A significant period following the Zeffo's disappearance from Ontotho and the subsequent forgetting of their Temple, the planet became the home of Humanoid sentient beings. These people established local governments, maintaining their world's isolation from the broader galaxy for a considerable duration, before finally deciding to create a unified planetary government and join the Galactic Republic. While the Ontothons presented a united front and aimed to foster trade prospects by forging an agreement with the Daa Corporation, the Fylari people voiced their opposition to this contract, citing the encroachment upon the land surrounding the ancient Zeffo Temple's ruins. Before conflicts could escalate, the local population requested the Republic's intervention. While Republic officials were dispatched, a crisis in the Bunka system delayed them, leading the Jedi High Council to step in and offer to mediate a peaceful resolution to the dispute over land rights.
The High Council deployed Jedi Master Eno Cordova and his Padawan Cere Junda to oversee the process, hoping that Cordova's fascination with ancient cultures would be beneficial to the mission. Upon the Jedi's arrival at Ontotho City Spaceport to meet with Dylanto Daa of Daa Corporation, the delegation proceeded to the Fylar region, where the independent nation consented to receive the mediators. During the Jedi's journey in an armored convoy through the Fylar Forest, they were ambushed by armed combatants, resulting in Junda's separation from her Master, whom she believed to have perished in the attack.
Junda regained consciousness in a cell situated within the Fylari nation, where the Fylari leader Neralli explained that her people had rescued Junda from the wreckage of the destroyed convoy and wished to ascertain who had attacked the delegates. Neralli provided a tour of the Fylari nation, explaining that her people had long protected the ancient Temple at the heart of their land, despite not knowing who built it or what secrets were held within its sealed walls.
Some time subsequent to its formation, the Galactic Empire dispatched its forces to bring the planet under control, achieving considerable success with the exception of resistance in a particular area. The Inquisitor known as the Second Sister was dispatched to look into reports of Jedi activity in the area.
